McCain Joining Senate Foreign Relations Committee

McCain Joining Senate Foreign Relations Committee

IGOR BOBIC 4:20 PM EST, MONDAY DECEMBER 10, 2012

Foreign Policy's Josh Rogin reports that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is joining the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The former Republican nominee for president will also remain on the Senate Armed Services Committee, stepping aside for Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), the next chair:

McCain, who finishes his six-year term as ranking Republican on the SASC this year, will not challenge Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) for the leadership post on the SFRC, but his presence will be felt, especially during the confirmation hearings, which could be especially contentious this time around if Rice is chosen as the nominee. Those nomination hearings would be chaired by Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) -- that is, unless Kerry gets the nod himself.

McCain perhaps putting public pressure on McConnell to appoint him?

UPDATE: McCain spokesman Brian Rogers writes in to say that next year's committee assignments are not yet final and the leadership has the final say.

"Senator McCain has expressed interest in joining the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but no final decisions on committee assignments have been made," Rogers said.

If I were John Kerry, I'd want a new job too instead of babysitting Old White Guy.

calm and under control when they were both on the POW committee. Read McCain's book on that period in the Senate. It actually should have been used by one of the two men when he ran for President - Kerry, not McCain.

It is his policies. He's a neo-con who wants to bomb every country on the planet if such country does anything that displeases conservatives here.

There are young people who have neo-con views. I haven't heard of a person of color that does, but any that might exist would be as reprehensible as McCain but would have the potential to screw up our foreign policy for many decades. McCain, eventually, will have to retire--I hope!
