Gay hate crime faker found guilty

LINCOLN A woman accused of making up a gay hate crime has pleaded no contest and was found guilty.
Charlie Rogers entered the plea Monday afternoon in Lancaster County Court and was found guilty of the misdemeanor charge of false reporting. Lancaster County Judge Gale Pokorny ordered sentencing for Feb. 14.
Rogers, 34, a lesbian, told police last summer that she was attacked by three masked men who broke into her Lincoln home and cut gay slurs into her arms and abdomen. News of the attack prompted supporters to organize rallies in Lincoln and Omaha that drew hundreds of participants.
Although police officials have said none of the physical evidence supports Rogers' version of events, she recently posted a video online in which she maintained her story. She accused police of conducting an incomplete inquiry that focused solely on her from the start.

I'm sorry this woman felt the need to do this.
As a gay man who grew up in the South I know it's not easy being gay in very religious, very right-wing places. I suspect Ms. Rogers has had a difficult time growing up and living in a largely conservative state like NE.
I won't vilify or deify her for her plight. I'll just comment that it is one shared by many people. Not all of them turn to false police reports. Unfortunately many of them turn to suicide.
I will paraphrase and alter MLK and say that one day we will not judge people on their sexual orientation but on the content of their character.
Sadly we still have not fully arrived at his dream we would not judge people on the color of their skin but the content of their character.

(1,353 posts)seems to be sorely lacking, then. She deserves the highest opprobrium because people like her make it worse for actual victims of hate crimes.
