The reference by Murdoch was to Australia's conservative government banning all self-loading, rimfire and pump-action firearms following the Port Arthur massacre in 1996. The gun control measures were near-unanimously supported by all political parties.

(126 posts)If Malcolm Turnbull was leader, I would have three options to choose from. I don't just say this because of this tweet. Malcolm is one of a dying breed: an intelligent conservative of the small l liberal persuasion. He doesn't talk down to his audience and is willing to cull conservative sacred cows if he must.

(6,068 posts)Tony Abbott is effectively a "DLP stooge" as Peter Costello calls him - economically wetter than most Tories, but socially conservative. Malcolm Turnbull is the opposite - socially liberal, but very dry in terms of economic policy. Remember his calls to reduce the top marginal rate of tax to 30% - which would make the tax curve very nearly flat in practical terms.
Better a leader who is less minded to screw the poor, even if it is accompanied by some socially conservative rhetoric.
