Turnbull targets Murdoch over guns

Source: Sydney Morning Herald

Coalition communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull could get media mogul Rupert Murdoch on the phone, but via Twitter, millions of other people have been able to see their conversation.

A tweet sent from the Coalition frontbencher to the media mogul over the weekend - supporting tighter gun laws in the United States - has been retweeted more than 2400 times, with more than 1000 ‘‘favourites’’, as of Monday morning.

and is currently shadow minister for communications.

The reference by Murdoch was to Australia's conservative government banning all self-loading, rimfire and pump-action firearms following the Port Arthur massacre in 1996. The gun control measures were near-unanimously supported by all political parties.

If Malcolm Turnbull was leader, I would have three options to choose from. I don't just say this because of this tweet. Malcolm is one of a dying breed: an intelligent conservative of the small l liberal persuasion. He doesn't talk down to his audience and is willing to cull conservative sacred cows if he must.

Tony Abbott is effectively a "DLP stooge" as Peter Costello calls him - economically wetter than most Tories, but socially conservative. Malcolm Turnbull is the opposite - socially liberal, but very dry in terms of economic policy. Remember his calls to reduce the top marginal rate of tax to 30% - which would make the tax curve very nearly flat in practical terms.

Better a leader who is less minded to screw the poor, even if it is accompanied by some socially conservative rhetoric.
