2 Kansas officers fatally shot outside market

Source: Salon

Two Kansas police officers were shot outside a grocery store Sunday while responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle and died later at a hospital, authorities said.

Topeka Police Chief Ronald Miller called the shootings of Cpl. David Gogian and Officer Jeff Atherly “unspeakable.” He said both Gogian, 50, and Atherly, 29, were shot in the head by a gunman who opened fire on them within minutes of their arrival to investigate the vehicle.

Police said they are searching for a 22-year-old man believed to have been the one who fired on the officers. He remained at large Sunday night.

A third officer was at the scene when the shooting happened, but was not injured.

There have been at least two people killed by police here within the past year, one shot in the chest without ever having pointed a weapon., other such incidents across the nation. We are not safer just because the guns are in the hands of Mr. Charlie.

Republicans don't think people shouldn't have the right to vote. Other people think some shouldn't have guns. The same lack of thinking goes into both positions.

Millions of people keep and use guns safely, the constitution guarantees the right for a good reason. It also denotes the right to free speech, something else that has gotten a lot of innocent people, including babies, older children, mothers and fathers killed, and we are standing on their bodies.

But we wouldn't be any safer if only the oligarchs had free speech, and we won't be any safer to take guns away from law-abiding citizens.

I said we are no safer taking guns away from millions of safe, law-abiding gun owners, as was your original assertion.

Plenty of evidence to the contrary, none but a few ill-thought out Internet opinions to support it.

As to the other point, even though just a silly diversion, the error is easy to spot, and common, because the history cited is backwards. The 2nd was important because the government went to war on the citizens, not the other way around.

Perhaps you can find someone else who has more time and cares to discuss it. Bye.

The killer is still loose

Yep, armed cops get killed. Tell that to the NRA.

The NRA's excuse: The cop is not a member of a citizen's posse, so he's fair game.

..."Tiscareno"... does that sound Italian? Enlarged the photo to get a better look at him. Skinhead? Ex-military? And what kind of photo is that? A previous arrest photo? Or possibly a passport photo? 22 years old. What is going on with our young male adults??

Cross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle, in my eye. Stack of Bibles, the whole nine yards.
At first I thought it might be Mexican. Looking at his picture didn't help much because of his haircut, I guess. For all the world, and of course it's a total coincidence, but I think he looks a little like George Zimmerman. Haven't rechecked the link yet to see if it has been updated. BTW, I think it was NBC,@ c. 7:15am, they showed the front of the store, and that the stand-off continued. I think I said all those things, because sometimes folks don't click on the link to check out the rest of the story. Two policemen were shot dead, supposedly, by this guy. Peace.

But won't bore everyone with pontification. Stereotyping is a serious problem in this country. It's the daughter of bigotry. I have an unusual name myself. Seriously.

17. gunman in hospital after all night stand off
Mon Dec 17, 2012, 09:33 AM
Dec 2012

The man suspected of fatally shooting to Topeka police officers last night is in the hospital. Police used tear gas to get David E. Tiscareno to come out of his home after an overnight standoff.

According to our news partners, WDAF in Kansas City, the 22-year-old shot himself and was taken to the hospital. His condition is unknown.

50-year-old Cpl David Gogian and 29-year-old Officer Jeff Atherly were shot and killed at a Dillon's store late Sunday. They were responding to a suspicious vehicle call around 6:30 pm when eyewitnesses reported several shots fired.

A third officer showed up a short time later and fired at the gunman. Police say the gunman was hit as he was running away.

... in Kansas. The gunman who killed the 2 police officers is dead. They tear-gassed the house he was holed up in and when he came out he had the gun in his hand and shot at officers, and police fired one shot, killing him dead on the spot.

I don't agree with the assumption that the writer of the story jumped to, saying that they would probably never know what motivated the gunman, since he's dead. There were two other people in that car who were taken in for questioning.

Topeka has a close-knit community, what with having come through that horrible tornado a couple years ago. My heart goes out to the families of those two officers and to the Topeka community.

How can that be?

These are life saving devices!

The officers being armed should have deterred the crime from happening!

Must be faulty life saving devices.

Time to have a recall on ALL faulty life saving devices.

****I am assuming this link works

Our local paper, horrible paper, has cut off news unless you pay $14.95/month. You may be able to get it if interested, there is a limit and if you have not exceeded it you can read. It was in it's best years long ago never worth this much, now it is not worth getting to lay in the bottom of the bird cage. It is tiny and mostly advertising. I had to grab the link before the screen warning came up.****
