Bomb kills ten young girls in eastern Afghanistan
December 16, 2012
KABUL, Afghanistan Ten young girls were killed when a bomb exploded as they were gathering firewood outside their village in eastern Afghanistan on Monday morning, an official said.
It was not clear what triggered the explosion outside Dawlatzai village in Nangarhar province's Chaperhar district, said Mohammad Seddiq, the government administrator for the district. He spoke to The Associated Press by phone from the site of the blast.
The girls ranged in age from 9 to 13 and all came from different families, he said. Two others were seriously wounded and were in critical condition at a hospital, Seddiq said.

(111,267 posts)It seems beyond weird that anyone would target little girls out gathering firewood for their families, but I guess thee are some men out there with a visceral hatred of anything female.

(443 posts)Or isn't that the argument. We shouldn't limit our ability to indiscriminately wipe out large numbers of people in our effort to defend ourselves.
It is funny how substitution of bombs for assault weapons, both instruments of mass killing/casualties have different connotations for some people. Little bombs versus atomic bombs or pistols versus automatic assault rifles everything is a matter of degrees.
Bombs don't kill people, people kill people. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. I call BS. The problem is access to the killers weapon of choice.

(47 posts)Soviet era landmine (presumably an anti-tank mine given the size of the blast), detonated after being hit by an axe according the the BBC.

(47 posts)a 'bomb' in normal parlance suggests something dropped from the sky, and when it causes death or injury the assumption is made - and has been alluded to up the thread - that it fell out of the sky, and then went bang, and killed 9 (i think) children.
given that NATO is the only body currently dropping bombs in Afghanistan, this might lead to the belief that 'we' killed a load of children, doubtless on purpose, because 'we're' a load of psychopaths who bathe in the blood of children to look young, and we use the tears of orphans as aftershave.
the truth is that a completely different country - one that (arguably) no longer exists - buried a mine, with no control over when it would detonate, or against what, and 30+ years later a kid looking for firewood hit it with an axe, and it expoloded.

(11,014 posts)here is the counter argument .... if those girls were equipped with a bomb each this would never have happened.
