Boehner invites Obama for State of the Union on February 12
Source: CNN
(CNN) - House Speaker John Boehner sent a letter Friday to President Barack Obama formally inviting him to deliver the first State of the Union address of his second term on February 12.
In the letter, Boehner wrote "Our nation continues to face immense challenges, and the American people expect us to work together in the new year to find meaningful solutions."
"This will require a willingness to seek common ground as well as presidential leadership," Boehner continued. "For that reason, the Congress and the Nation would welcome an opportunity to hear your plan and specific solutions for addressing America's great challenges."
Last year Obama delivered his State of the Union address on January 24. Topics for this year's address could include ongoing battles with Congress over the federal debt, tighter gun control laws, and a revamp of the nation's immigration laws, which Obama has vowed to tackle during his second term in the White House.

I wonder what President Obama thinks about having to wait until February instead of delivering the speech in January.
Since Lincoln's birthday is February 12th perhaps Obama will be okay with the date.
UPDATE:

The White House says it has accepted the invitation.

(14,255 posts)I thought the date was already decided, in January.
Seems high-handed.

(34,857 posts)Since his Inaugural Address will be given in late January.
Bush gave his on February 2nd, 2005. Clinton gave his on February 4th, 1997. Reagan gave his on February 6th, 1985. So, not much difference.

(36,974 posts)... the inauguration being this year - so it makes sense that they would want a little time between the two big speeches.
