Markey blasts Stop & Shop over hiring replacement workers

Source: Boston Herald

Senate candidate Congressman Ed Markey blasted Stop & Shop today for allegedly hiring temporary replacement workers to staff its stores in the event of a strike by or lockout of United Food and Commercial Workers International Union workers.

The Quincy-based supermarket chain, which is negotiating with five UFCW locals representing 40,000-plus workers in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island whose three-year contract is set to expire Feb. 23, has set up eight hiring sites for the replacement workers.

“Particularly troublesome are the reports that indicate Stop & Shop is offering these ‘replacement workers’ higher starting wages than wages currently offered to starting unionized employees,” Markey wrote in a letter to Stop & Shop Chief Operating Officer James McCann, citing a recent Herald report.

His letter seemed fairly civil.
And wow, you should read the comments to the article. (Actually don't bother, mostly knuckle-dragging RW blather)
