Black smoke as morning fails to bring new pope

(Reuters) - Cardinals in secret conclave failed twice on Wednesday morning to elect a new pope, as black smoke over the Sistine Chapel showed ballots on the first full day of voting were inconclusive.
After an inconclusive first vote on Tuesday night, the 115 cardinal electors should hold another two ballots later on Wednesday after praying for inspiration from God for a choice that can lead the Roman Catholic Church out of crisis.
Having spent the night closeted in a nearby guesthouse, the cardinals attended Mass in the Pauline Chapel in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace and returned to the Renaissance splendor of the Sistine Chapel to hold the two morning ballots.
They face a tough task in finding one of their number capable of facing a string of scandals and internal strife which are thought to have contributed to Pope Benedict's decision in February to become the first pontiff in 600 years to resign.

(8,377 posts)All of these Cardinals are waist deep in scandal. Why would any of them want to bring in a guy who is going to clean house? They are all in the sewer together.
On the contrary, the debate is probably about who will be the most devious at hiding the scandals and keeping all of the church hierarchy fat and happy, with an uninterrupted supply of young boys.

(28,581 posts)Promotion within the church is political, not spiritual. Anyone strong enough to stand up against the unethical behavior of other clergy would NEVER be promoted. The entire church hierarchy is based on protecting Rome and it's brand. Rock the boat and you find yourself with no uppper movement and perhaps even sent to more difficult posts.

(25,270 posts)I didn't think there would be a Pope elected in the middle of our night here in the good old U S of A. That wouldn't be good for all the U.S. Networks that sent people to Rome to cover this event. That white smoke needs to pour out of that smokestack when it is in the middle of the day here in the U.S. so that they can give us wall to wall coverage and analysis.
Just like sports events provide stops for TV during commercials - the Cardinals where told not to elect a pope in the middle of the US night.

(25,270 posts)I forgot to say 'sarcasm' in my previous post.
Just trying to be funny. But think about it. It would be devastating to the networks if they elected a Pope in the middle of our night.
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)and certainly wouldn't be surprised if they took it into consideration considering how many Catholics are in this country and there is speculation that the new Pope may come from the US. I just wondered if they had confirmed that in some way.

(35,701 posts)Let's face it, as head of the Inquisition he knew where the bodies were buried. Maybe he stayed on as Pope just long enough to make sure they stayed buried.

(35,701 posts)Otherwise if this goes on too long and they take too many votes there could be a lot of dead Cardinals.
