Oldest man in recorded history dies at 116 in Japan

Source: NBC News

TOKYO -- A Japanese man who was recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest person in recorded history died on Wednesday.
Jiroemon Kimura, a 116-year-old former post officer worker, was born in 1897 -- the same year as aviator Amelia Earhart and the year Britain's Queen Victoria marked her Diamond Jubilee. He died of natural causes in Kyoto prefecture.
In December, Kimura was recognized by Guinness as the oldest man documented in history when he reached the age of 115 years and 253 days. He was also dubbed "the last known man to live across three centuries," with Guinness noting:

When the supercentenarian was born, Marconi had yet to send the first radio communication over open sea, Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" had yet to be published, and the composer George Gershwin had not even been born.

Born in Kiev in 1907. Came to the states via Belgium after WWII.

Not really sure what her secret was, but she loved candy and never saw a doctor. Go fig.

Beets are also good.

In both cases it could have a lot to do with what wasn't eaten.

My rule of thumb: If you can't imagine seeing a food item being put out on your grandmother's/great grandmother's table, think twice about eating it.

Deep fried foods, hydrogenated oils in general, high fructose corn syrup, foods processed to be low in fiber, unnatural flavor enhancers and preservatives, all should be avoided.

Food = Medicine

You wouldn't muck around taking shoddily made medicine, or the wrong medicine, so apply that to what you eat and drink.

but she drank a cup of instant coffee every day, at least until she was in her 70's.

She loved sugar wafers and peanut butter - that much is certain.

Isn't borscht made with beets? We used to have that all the time.

Supposedly coffee has valuable antioxidants. I drink some though I try not to get heavy handed with my usage.

According to local media, Kimura ate a three-meal-a-day diet of rice, pumpkins and sweet potatoes.

And he didn't look a day over 85!
