NTSB statement on erroneous confirmation of crew names (because of "summer intern")

Source: NTSB
The National Transportation Safety Board apologizes for inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed as those of the pilots of Asiana flight 214, which crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6.
Earlier today, in response to an inquiry from a media outlet, a summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft.
The NTSB does not release or confirm the names of crewmembers or people involved in transportation accidents to the media. We work hard to ensure that only appropriate factual information regarding an investigation is released and deeply regret today's incident.
Appropriate actions will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated.

Wow, that summer intern can enjoy working at Wal-Mart, I guess.

(6,045 posts)However, to me this highlights the false idea we have a healthy news media in this country! Regardless if the President confirmed such disgusting racist names a REAL JOURNALIST working for a respected media organization would have caught this & never let it get on air...Instead we have a news media that simply repeats anything they hear without bothering to do even a tad bit of REAL JOURNALISM!!

(4,835 posts)This doesn't add up - Why would the NTSB be the ones confirming anything about a Korean airline?
The pilots names were all over the media hours after the crash...
How this got by so many levels of scrutiny is unbelievable...

(15 posts)Phone rings, intern answers. . .
This is Fox News in San Fran. . . We have the list of 4 captains on the recent crash and we need a confirm. . .
Now from what has been said, this "joke has been going around the aviation circuit for a few days. . . So maybe he's actually heard or seen it. . .
He hears the 4 names, rolls his eyes and says yes. . . hangs up the phone. . . Thinking his brother got somebody to crank him at "work'...

(21,088 posts)The instructor in the back seat watched my flying for a while, and then said, "I see you've been flying with our new Chinese instructor."
We didn't have a Chinese instructor at the club, so I said, "Who?"
To which he replied, "Wan Wing Lo."
So I leveled the wings...

(3,220 posts)This is total bs and probably not true. Blaming an intern, probably unpaid, is cowardly and ridiculous, considering it was probably not even the intern's fault.
