UN says Syria refugee crisis worst since Rwanda

Source: BBC

The conflict in Syria has caused the world's worst refugee crisis for 20 years, with an average of 6,000 people fleeing every day in 2013, the UN says.

UN refugee chief Antonio Guterres said refugee numbers had not risen "at such a frightening rate" since the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

He was speaking to the UN Security Council, which also heard that 5,000 people are being killed each month.

UN aid chief Valerie Amos said at least 6.8 million Syrians needed urgent help.

But this is bad . . . Just finished re reading We Wish To Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families by Philip Gourevitch. The refugee situation was not just Rwandan Hutus and Tutsis. It involved for example ethnic Rwandans living in Zaire that took UN Aid while looking the other way at Tutsis being expelled by Hutus.

These Human Beings are ALL Syrians. Not overflow refugees from other countries. My god.

It's to late now to 'arm' anyone. There is nothing left to protect.

How about the 'leaders' McCain met with and took that photo with ? Did those pictured survive the genocide, in refugee camps now or were they part of Asaads people all the time? Some presser should ask McCain, he seems to be able to contact them.

It's mean : we will rebuilt.

Something Assad cannot do.

Une mosquée se relève. Une église se rénove. Un immeuble surgit à nouveau de terre. Le patrimoine historique est perdu à jamais. On ne remplace pas les morts. Mais les survivants se souviendront d'eux.

A mosque rises. A church is being renovated. Building a new earth arises. The historical heritage is lost forever. It does not replace the dead. But the survivors will remember them.

They bear heavy responsibility for ginning up and financing this ill-advised rebellion.

They've spent $4 billion+ on armaments for rebels.

They ought to spend another $4 billion to settle the refugees.

To those who need it the most, such as children, old people and injured soldiers of both sides.

you have an obligation to ensure that it is quickly over.

If you do not intend to ensure that it is quickly over, you have an obligation to not assist in the formation of the crisis. Hoping that it will end quickly is nice. It's swell to hope that there aren't hundreds of thousands of refugees, scores of thousands of dead.

Perhaps we can send the country a huge shipment of hope. Doesn't take much room. Could probably fit in a small envelope, so a simple air-mail stamp should cover the postage.
