Flake Drops Stringer, Backs Spitzer in Comptroller Race

Endorsement swapping this late in the election season is rare but not unprecedented. Rep. Yvette Clarke backed out of endorsing Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynesin favor of a rival, and several state legislators withdrew their endorsements from Assemblyman Micah Kellner who is mounting a campaign for City Council in the wake of sexual harassment allegations.
Now Rev. Floyd Flake, a former congressman himself, is changing his endorsement from Scott Stringer to Eliot Spitzer in the city comptroller race, City & State has learned.
Flake has changed his mind on endorsements beforebut he usually waits a few years. He endorsed Michael Bloomberg for mayor over Bill Thompson in 2009. This year, hes going with Thompson. Its unclear what influence the Queens power brokers endorsement will have on the comptroller race.
