Plan For Belle Isle Utopia Revived After Bankruptcy Filing (Detroit)
Source: WWJ Newsradio 950 Detroit
Should Belle Isle be sold for $1 billion to a developer so he can turn it into a tax-free commonwealth with its own laws?
The outlandish idea, initially proposed early this year, is gaining some interest now that Detroit has filed for bankruptcy.
Thats according to Rod Lockwell, who wants to turn the island into a private city-state with a focus on free market capitalism and limited government.
He says it would be a vibrant community, served by a monorail, and rife with exclusive homes, condos, restaurants and shopping centers with funds set aside to keep the park itself and its historic structures intact.

I say go for it!
But I warn you, its gonna get ugly.
Utopia with no way to feed it's self. No place for manufacturing of any kind.
Maybe if they went ahead and did it, when it fell flat on it's face, that would be the last we would hear of such silliness.

(369 posts)There are several "utopia" islands already in existence. Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard come to mind. It is so expensive to live there, that the uber wealthy have to have live in servants. On Nantucket, there was a low cost housing development with 600 apartments for local workers. It was bought by a private contractor and turned into million dollar condos. There is no place for the help to live.
Belle Isle will end up an unsustainable garbage dump. Wait till the locals blockade the only entrances and there is no food or water on the island.
