Lake sets new school-busing fee, agrees to transport students who walk risky routes

It's not quite "all aboard," but Lake County school leaders Monday moved closer to satisfying angry parents who have been battling for weeks to get bus service restored to their children.
The School Board unanimously voted to allow thousands of students who live within 2 miles of their schools to pay a fee so they can get back on the school bus. Still other students will get bus service if their walking routes to school are considered dangerous by a new standard created by the district.
Board members were spurred to action after weeks of parents and residents protesting that the cuts to the 4,300 students or about a tenth of the student population were poorly planned and put finances before children's safety. The School Board took the action in June to help close a $16.3 million budget gap.
Many parents took to Facebook, posting photos and videos of dangerous routes their children were having to take to school.
