White House Threatens To Veto GOP’s Bill To Defund Obamacare
Source: TPM
The White House issued a formal veto threat Tuesday of a House Republican proposal to defund Obamacare as part of a continuing resolution to keep the federal government funded.
The GOP's two-pronged bill is designed to avoid the all-out confrontation that conservative advocates want; it permits Obamacare to be funded if the Senate votes down the separate measure to defund it. A House vote is expected as early as Thursday.
"The Administration strongly opposes House passage of H.R. 2775 because the goal of the bill is already being accomplished while the text of the bill would create delays that could cost millions of hard-working middle‑class families the security of affordable health coverage and care they deserve," the White House Office of Management and Budget said in a statement. "It is time for the Congress to stop fighting old political battles and join the President in an agenda focused on providing greater economic opportunity and security for middle class families and all those working to get into the middle-class."
"If the President were presented with H.R. 2775, his senior advisers would recommend that he veto the bill."

(11,495 posts)If it's one thing they can agree on is they "hate" the president, and they will do anything to stop Obama care because they know that once it's in place, the people of this country are going to like it, and that just won't do for the GOP. As posted below, the GOP also knows Obamacare will lead to a better chance of seeing a real universal health care program for the country, and we know that is not something their rich backers want to see.

(27,670 posts)it could very well be the beginning of the end of republican party as a major player in US politics.

(24,412 posts)why the GOP finds millions of Americans getting access to health care coverage more offensive than say, shoveling trillions of dollars into destroying, occupying, and "rebuilding" Iraq and sending thousands of American troops to be maimed and killed all the while accomplishing absolutely nothing other than the removal of a single tinpot dictator and his degraded regime. I won't even mention the irony of US taxpayers footing the bill to ensure that all Iraqis got healthcare guaranteed to them while Bush was reminding us that all Americans have access to emergency rooms.

Me? Obamacare is a good start. And if we hold the line -
It becomes like Bush's Tax Cuts for the Rich . . . it will never go away.
But - we can make it better.
Hold the line President Obama - I know a lot of folks who voted for you think you just suuuuuuuuuuck - but me? I think you are laying the foundation to completely undo everything that has happened in this country from 1980 to January 2009. Death of the Neocon by a thousand cuts.

(11,495 posts)I couldn't agree more. Obamacare is the foundation to build a universal health care system, and like you said, the GOP knows that and that is why they are doing everything they can to stop it. We can't let that happen.

(45,274 posts)I freely acknowledge that Obamacare contains some real advances in the public interest (dependent coverage to 26, no pre-existing conditions, a lot more people covered than in the past, etc.), but I do have trouble seeing how it doesn't really serve to entrench the insurance companies, whom I see as parasites that serve to drive up the overall cost of health care while unduly restricting benefits.

(3,783 posts)I do and I've already seen a huge difference in the way the insurance companies treat claims. I also got a refund from them due to ACA.
I agree that ACA worked with insurance companies, but they did not come out emboldened from their previous position- they are less able to screw over the consumer and held to some standards now. In the past, they would approve an expensive test with pre-authorization and then just not pay for it. Deny care if you got cancer even though it is supposed to be covered. Etc.

(45,274 posts)Now I'm on Medicare with a ($1000/mo) supplemental policy. I'm pretty much aware of how things used to be, but my current practice is forensic rather than in the health care arena. I have, however, sat through some workshops on how ACA changes things for providers, and it looks like there will be some pretty vast changes that will pretty much eliminate small and solo providers for a variety of reasons.

(45,274 posts)It covers both my wife & me. Before I got onto MC, it was costing $1800/mo, which was larger by quite a bit than my retirement check. It is a pretty good plan, though.

(812 posts)All across the nation companies are quietly letting full-time personnel go and hiring part time low wage workers.
My guess is the National Chamber of Commerce is the responsible group for spreading the strategy of fail.
But who is the mastermind?
My first instinct would be to check the 2012 guest list of Aspen Convention for the perpetraitor(misspelled on purpose).

(24,412 posts)Boehner talks about wanting the Democrats to "own" Obamacare even though it already "owns" it by having previously voted for it and/or refusing to repeal it. This is strictly a "face-saving" measure designed to placate the teabaggers (who, by the way, are NOT happy with it)
