Russia charges two Green peace activists with piracy

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Russian authorities charged two Greenpeace activists with piracy on Wednesday over a protest against Arctic oil drilling at a platform owned by state-controlled energy company Gazprom, the environmental group said.

The piracy charges, which Greenpeace said were absurd, are punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

The two who were charged, Brazilian crew member Ana Paula Alminhana and British freelance videographer Kieron Bryan, were among 30 arrested after the protest last month in which a Greenpeace icebreaker approached the Prirazlomnaya platform and two activists tried to scale it.

Russia charges five Greenpeace activists with piracy

(AFP) – 33 minutes ago

Moscow — Russian investigators on Wednesday charged five Greenpeace campaigners with piracy over an open-sea protest against Arctic oil drilling, the environmental group said, calling the move an "outrage".

The charge against the activists -- a Briton, a Finn, a Brazilian, a Russian and a dual US-Swedish citizen -- dimmed hopes that 25 others detained over the protest could be indicted on a lesser charge.

Piracy by an organised group carries a punishment of between 10 and 15 years.

A spokeswoman for the Moscow-based Investigative Committee declined to provide details of the charges, confirming only that the activists from the group's Dutch-flagged Arctic Sunrise icebreaker detained for two months were being charged.

I'm thinking Putin may subsequently release them as a gesture of goodwill - hope so anyway.

Outside of the DU I've not come across any mention whatsoever of that subject which in effect just served to federalise existing regional laws across Russian. Prior to that I have no recollection of anyone ever raising the subject.

Sochi games have been officially approved now too. IOC gives Sochi seal of approval for Russia's Winter Olympics http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2013/sep/26/ioc-sochi-russia-winter-olympics

Then we have the possibility of a worse nuclear disaster in Japan than has already occurred in 2020 if they don't start taking the decommissioning and clean up of Fukashima.

All Greenpeace activists in Arctic Sunrise incident accused of piracy

All 30 people on board the vessel Arctic Sunrise have been charged with piracy, the Russian Investigative Committee (SKR) said on Thursday. They deny the accusations of their actions against oil drilling at the Prirazlomnaya platform in the Pechora Sea and refuse to give evidence, the SKR press service said. Meanwhile, the Leninsky District Court in Murmansk is preparing to forward appeals, which have been filed contesting the decision to remand all the activists, to a higher court - the Murmansk Regional Court.
