Cook Report Moves 14 House Races Towards Democrats Following Shutdown
Source: TPM
CAITLIN MACNEAL OCTOBER 17, 2013, 6:47 PM EDT
The Cook Political Report changed its ratings of 15 House seats Friday, moving 14 of them in the direction of Democrats following the government shutdown.
"Mostly as a result of the damage House Republicans sustained during the 16-day government shutdown, we are making changes to our ratings in 15 House seats, all but one in Democrats' direction," Cook Political Report said in a statement.
House Republican seats Cook deemed more in danger include Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI), Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI), Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY) and Rep. Mark Takano (R-CA). The Cook statement warned that while Democrats have acheived fundraising success recently, they still have a while before the 2014 elections.
"Democrats still have a very uphill climb to a majority, and it's doubtful they can sustain this month's momentum for another year," the Cook statement says. "But Republicans' actions have energized Democratic fundraising and recruiting efforts and handed Democrats a potentially effective message.

Come on, she like so many others such as Ted Cruz are still grandstanding. They just keep giving the gift that keeps on giving.

I am optimistic about the future, there are to many bat shit crazy tea baggers that will keep up the good fight, for us! Think Ryan, Rand, Bachman!

I think we have a much better chance as well. Obamacare will help a lot, but I really think the majority of Eisenhower type Republicans have turned the snooze off and finally woke up.

(81,466 posts)Besides, I would ask the question of the first response here - SOOOOOooooo then, that means, we do nothing???????
Yeah, certainly. It's a year away. Things could change. Does it not then become incumbent upon every last one of us to do EVERYTHING we can think of to build upon these gains? To protect the initiative we've gained, with all the fresh new talking points and on-offense tactics that are popping up like bubbles to the top of a glass of champagne? We have so much new ammunition to fight with now!!! We have a year to USE that time to reinforce and nurture the little buds of clarification that have started to break through the dirt. We now have the example of...
1) WHO was it who behaved like the adults in the room?
2) WHO was concerned about our financial future and WHO was it who wanted to go for the stunt, even while conceding it was a fool's errand?
3) WHO didn't give a rat's ass if 800-THOUSAND people were furloughed from their jobs? Good AMERICAN workers - turned out of work - for that same fool's errand!!!
4) WHO was it that thought this LOSER stunt was worth flushing 24 BILLION dollars down the crapper? Just to make a point? WHAT point? And we can afford that when you guys are yammering on and on about how we're spending too much money????????? How 'bout it, 'eh? Okay, ted cruz made a lot of money in donations. Is he gonna be hiring more people, then? Is he gonna be donating more to food banks? Is he gonna be covering some furloughed worker's mortgage payment? Did he give up his paycheck while this went on? Was he okay with screwing his own staff out of affordable health care?
5) WHO was it turning their collective noses up at the warnings from every credible financial analyst and voice and outfit in every corner of not just the country but THE WORLD? WHO was it shrugging it off with another "meh, not gonna happen, not gonna be that bad..." How correct have they called it on ANYTHING lately??????
6) WHO seemed more deserving of your trust to govern? Seriously????????? You LIKE the idea of a pack of baboons controlling your local zoo or wild animal park? How do you think THAT would work out?
I could go on but I'm probably way past boring people here. But I'd put it directly to anyone who huffs and puffs - "what the hell do you want? ANARCHY??????????????"

(11,522 posts)I'm totally with calimary. Most voters don't follow all the details as closely as we do here, and many are still learning what was behind this shutdown. IMO the polling will keep getting better for Democrats for another week or two, and we need to make sure the numbers stay there. That, plus the tea party will more than likely continue to piss off moderates and people sitting on the fence, therefore I believe retaking the House is entirely possible.

(63 posts)Grassroots will be critical in getting us closer to taking the House back. People must understand that this group of GOPer's need to be electorally eliminated for this nation to move forward in a positive direction. It needs to be hammered home each day between now and next November.
Can't wait to see how it turns out here in Florida. People have been waiting for 4 years to get their hands on The Medicare Fraudster Rick Scott and people are already fired up to get him out of Tallahassee.

And there are about 30 R's (according to the Businessweek story on here the other day) who are at risk of losing. I think it said 29. Nonetheless, I feel we could get 19-20 of those.
I'll be surprised if we pickup 25. But anything is possible.

And thank god the T-Party didn't stick to their Conservative principals, because
Liberals' policies would have no chance against boldly-aggressive "pure" Conservatism,

(90 posts)The flyer my employer put out about how much our insurance policy is going
up in January has upset and pissed off an AWFUL lot of folks. I work for Lowe's,
a Fortune 500 company. If OUR rates are going up that much, what's ACA going
to do to smaller companies?
When folks get hit in the pocketbook, they take notice. And if elections roll around
when they are pissed off and there is a TARGET for their frustrations......uh oh.
How many R's voted for ACA again?
All I'm saying here is let us not be patting ourselves on the back quite yet.

(11,297 posts)Democrats should be thinking of the next Legislative and/or Executive and/or media initiative to corner Republicans on an issue that they lose. And continue this momentum.
Any ideas?
