Council votes 5-2 for police to dismantle Occupy Eugene site; police and camp organizers negotiating

The Eugene City Council voted 5-2 this afternoon to instruct police to dismantle the Occupy Eugene encampment at Washington-Jefferson Park as soon as practically possible.

Mayor Kitty Piercy asked that the council meet in emergency session at noon today after hearing about a series of reported assaults at the Occupy Eugene site, including one that police said resulted in a man being taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Councilors George Brown and Betty Taylor voted against the motion to dismantle the camp.

my comment: We are taking down the Teepee and dome, and removing equipment we don't want to lose. A drunk man and a guy staying on site fought and it was too hard for peacekeepers to hear calls for them over the sound of the generators there to power high powered lights the police had set up near the entrance to the camp.

Some of us including myself plan on being arrested when they move on us. It will happen sooner than later.

sudden change of plans, Christmas week is not cool. My ward's councilor at least was on the right side. Kitty needs to explain the U-turn.

notion of the extension. I'm not sure what the future holds for Occupy Eugene, but one thing is without a doubt, the encampment is going to end in the next day or so.

That was a big debate, right?

Anyways, the Eugene Police are filth.
Flying up and down the Willamette in their LOUD 'Air Boat' yukking it up and hasling the destitute.
Bunch of nazis from California, Idaho or the boonies of Oregon
(which has some VERY conservative areas as I'm sure you know).

Scum.

Good luck.

Emergency meeting of the Eugene City Council

EUGENE, Ore. -- Occupy Eugene members are outraged by the city council's decision it made to end the exemption to camp at Washington-Jefferson Park.

They say they do not want to leave the camp, where they've formed a community that cares for each other and helps treat addictions.

Some of the Occupy members spoke out during Tuesday's city council meeting, saying that they expect a backlash from the community after kicking the homeless back out on the streets.

"I'm asking that this council act responsibly to work with Occupy Eugene and give us sufficient time in the middle of the holidays to make sure families needs are taken care of, that they keep their community connections, that they still have contacts where they can get their needs met, their addiction problems resolved, their violence problems resolved before they're thrown back into an uncaring world," said John Monroe.

The police broke one man's arm extracting him from his sleepng bag and tent the other day, and they have a strong 24/7 presence there.

We had them all over the site while we were waiting on word for the outcome at the city council. When it was announced that they had voted away the camping exemption, it precipitated a removal of thee dome and teepee as these structures are too valuble to wind up crushed in a dumpster.

They came through this morning ad stripped all the signs at the perimeter, and were rousing people from their tents on any pretense. Many homelees are spooked and removed their precious backpacks and stashed them elsewhere as they normally do in Eugene where it is illegal to sleep outside.

In my opinion they will move very early in the morning to catch everyone when everyone is sleeping. The atmosphere was tense when I left a while ago.
