Indian protesters attack Dominos Pizza store over diplomatic row with US

Source: Guardian

Protesters ransacked a Dominos Pizza outlet in a Mumbai suburb on Friday, demanding a ban on US goods as officials from the two countries struggled to defuse a row over the arrest of an Indian diplomat in New York.

Police and the Indian franchise outlety said no one was hurt in the attack, which came amid anger in India over the arrest and subsequent strip-search of Devyani Khobragade for visa fraud and under-payment of her housekeeper.

India has demanded that the charges be dropped against the diplomat and her father threatened to start a fast if US authorities pressed ahead with the case.

The US secretary of state, John Kerry, expressed regret over the case in a phonecall to India's national security adviser this week, but US prosecutors have defended the investigation against Khobragade and her treatment.

State can't keep the UN from accrediting her (though, ultimately, we could always PNG her).

State has said (correctly IMO) that her new full immunity does not apply retroactively, but what they're not mentioning is that if the UN has accredited her as a diplomatic agent (and the US has no say in that) then even though she's not criminal immune, she can't be arrested. We can ask her to attend the trial (I doubt she will), but we can't then put her in jail if she is found guilty, as long as she holds a sufficient UN accreditation.

Now, a question I'm finally seeing people in India ask is this: since Bharara told the Indian embassy in Washington and the Indian consulate in New York that he was contemplating criminal action against her (this is a standard courtesy) in September, meaning they have had four months to adjust her status and did nothing until after the arrest. Why not? He told the Russians about the Medicaid scam investigation, and they removed everyone they couldn't upgrade, which is why he can't make any arrests there.

I wonder what the reaction would be if this had happened to a US diplomat in Mumbai.

That said, the Indians are revealing themselves as pretty classist, aren't they? Shit like this should only happen to low-class people, they seem to be implying.

against a black person that they should not be punished for it ?

this is how it is in india. they can't understand why the domestic servant is given certain rights. they think she should be thankful that they just allowed her to use their phone and other stupid shit .

it's gotten so fucking bizarre that they have started to accuse the nanny of being a CIA Agent. at the same time they claim the Nanny just wanted a green card to stay in the US .

and then they attack the indian american prosecutor who ordered the arrest of the human trafficker and accuse him of things. some have even made stupid comments about working for the white man.

first of all that prosecutor works for and got the job from a black man. and the person he is protecting is an indian woman.
