Group sues California over new transgender law

Groups trying to overturn a new California law allowing transgender students to choose public school restrooms and sports teams that correspond with their expressed genders have filed a lawsuit claiming state officials are unfairly refusing to count signatures seeking a referendum.

Sacramento-based Privacy For All Students, a coalition of conservative groups, filed the lawsuit Thursday against the secretary of state and two counties.

Opponents of the law that goes into effect on Jan. 1 said they have collected enough signatures for an initiative that would repeal it. Counties, however, were still reviewing the signatures.

Opponents say the law would violate the privacy of the majority of students and some might try to claim to be another gender simply to gain access to bathrooms.

3. This does bring up an important point ...

Let me preface this with ... I am not the least bit trans-phobic. The girl I share my 2-person office with at this very moment, a friend for the 6 years I've been working here ... is biologically male. I know, just a twist on 'some of my best friends are ... ', but I'm being dead serious here.

To be clear, I'm saying what I'm saying here NOT because of anything ACTUAL trans people would be doing that would be wrong, but because of what I fear some NON-trans people would do ... i.e. pretend to be trans-gender.


The point is this: what *is* the criteria going to be for assessing whether, say, a (biologically) male student is 'sufficiently trans' to be able to play, say, women's basketball? Or, say, to shower in the girl's locker room? Or does the law at least draw the line at the locker room (which I kinda hope it would, tbh, otherwise you are really asking for trouble with this law).

As easy as it is to pooh-pooh these people, and impugn their motives (which, in actuality, do probably suck) ... it's an interesting question: would you really want a Senior (biological) Male showering with your Freshman daughter in the girls locker room, because (s)he claims to be trans? Would your DAUGHTER want this?

I mean, what if NOTHING else about this male appeared trans, (s)he didn't dress feminine or wear makeup or anything, hadn't had their gender changed on their license ... it's just 'their word'?

I've not read the actual law that's in place that these people want to see repealed, but I could see the lawmaker's in CA possibly going a little overboard and failing to consider these scenario's.

Does anyone know what the 'rules' are for 'qualifying' as a trans person? Or is it completely based on 'the honor system'? Because if I were a parent of a female student (esp. an athlete), I wouldn't feel that's acceptable. Not just because of the 'showers/bathroom' issue, but for sports competition issues. What if suddenly the #1 female volleyball team in CA was made up of nothing but biological males? Would that really be 'fair'? Do you really think some people wouldn't try to 'cheat'?

'What qualifies you as a trans person' under this law ... that is a legitimate question, that's all I'm saying. The honor system I think will eventually prove to be insufficient.

You are very concerned aren't you?

Yes, for sure, there will be an absolute flood of male athletes dressing and living as women in order to get on the woman's volleyball team. Plus lots of boys determined to pee in a stall next to a girl, so much so that they will change their names, their clothes, and their appearance and mannerisms just for the opportunity.

Did you sign up here just for this, or do you have other talking points that need expression?

Oh and playing the "I'm not the least bit transphobic but..." get out of jail free card is stale.
