'Suicide bomber' hits Russia's Volgograd train station

Source: BBC News

An explosion at a train station in the southern Russian city of Volgograd has killed at least 13 people, reports say.

A female suicide bomber was thought to be responsible for the blast, Russia's anti-terrorism committee said.

A suspected female suicide bomber killed at least six people when she attacked a bus in the city in October.

Moscow is concerned militant groups could be ramping up violence in the run up to the the 2014 winter Olympic Games in the city of Sochi in six weeks.

Female Suicide Bomber Kills at Least 18 at Volgograd Train Station.

MOSCOW, December 29 (RIA Novosti) – The death toll from an explosion at a train station in Russia's southern city Volgograd on Sunday continues to rise, with over a dozen people killed and scores more injured in what officials said was likely an attack by a female suicide bomber.

Police said that at least 18 people were killed and over 40 more injured by the blast that took place at 12:45 p.m. (8:45 a.m. GMT) in the Volgograd-1 train station.

Russia's Investigative Committee said the number of casualties from the explosion, which it called a terrorist attack, was at least 13.

Victims of the blast are being evacuated by Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry by plane to Moscow, approximately a 90-minute flight away, for medical help.

18+ innocent Russians killed and you're enjoying some sort of twisted revenge on Putin. If anyone is on the terrorists' side, its you with that comment.

I don't "enjoy" the death of anyone.

It's just a fact. And trust me, no one is more anti- terrorist than me.

In American history, the first foreign terror attack was the first WTC bombing in 2003, then the attacks on embassies in Nairobi and Dar e Salaam and then 9/11.

Russia has had Chechen terrorism since 1989 or before and far many Russians have died than Americans at the hands of terrorists.

Putin may just move-relocate the Chechen population and spread them out all over Russia.

I don't think it's a good idea to have thousands of Olympic visitors in a country that 'hides' their extensive civil unrest, as much as they can.

...

One of the policemen, later identified by media as Dmitry Makovkin, spotted the suspicious woman and tried to prevent the terrorist attack, eyewitnesses said.

“At first, she hesitated at the turnstile,” a source within the investigation told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper. “Dmitry Makovkin approached her and at that movement she suddenly started to rush inside. Dmitry crossed her path and it seems he covered her with his body. That’s when she blew herself up.”

“It was a very powerful blast,” the source added. “Dmitry died instantly. Three of his colleagues were injured and are currently in hospital.”

“The blast was carried out by a suicide bomber, who saw a policeman as she came up to the metal detectors, lost her nerve and detonated an explosive device, which was stuffed with strike elements,” Markin is cited as saying by ITAR-TASS.
According to preliminary estimations, the explosive device was equivalent to at least 10 kg of TNT, he said.

There are so many issues surrounding the Sochi Olympics and this is just one of them. I think there are going to be several attempted terrorist attacks. There are many people in the region who are unhappy about the way they are being treated.

Throw in the anti-gay laws, the protests, and the possible shortage of snow and you have a disaster in the making.

I've said it once and I'll say it a billion times, Russia should have never won the bid for the 2014 Olympics.

What a tragic history this city has had. The Battle for Stalingrad was one of the most horrific chapters of WWII.
