Flappy Bird creator says popular game will fly no more
Source: Reuters
The developer of Flappy Bird, currently the most popular free mobile game on Apple App Store and Google's Android Play store, has announced that he is taking the game down at midnight (1700 GMT) on Sunday.
Nguyen Ha Dong, a Hanoi-based game developer, announced the grounding of the addictive game in a Tweet at 1900 GMT on Saturday in which he also apologised to Flappy Bird players.
"22 hours from now, I will take 'Flappy Bird' down," Dong said adding: "It is not anything related to legal issues."
"I cannot take this anymore," he wrote.
Flappy Bird has caused a sensation after rising out of obscurity to become one of the most downloaded mobile games on both Apple and Google's online stores.

(27,509 posts)I've never played it, and I probably never will, but I downloaded it and saved it to sdcard with a backup app!
Just in case!

(2,975 posts)it was less of a game and more of a 'momentary distraction between ad revenue sinks' as it was anyway...

(5,668 posts)severely addicting. Especially with the nude mod on. have a 2009 patch on it and it took care of most of the crashes. and Steam came up with a big patch in Dec 2013 I assume because Postal 3 really stank . thanks to gog.com I can go over there and redownload the game smh and that nude mod isn't entirely easy to find.. easier to find the 2009 patch..

(21,188 posts)My 14 year niece, 16 year nephew and a 49 year old women were sitting with me at a table on super bowl sunday and they were mesmerized by the game. I couldn't download the app on my ancient IPAD 1 otherwise I would have been caught up in the game. It kind of reminds me of pac man or super mario jumping over the fences.
Something tells me this will come back as a paid app.

(9,350 posts)I wonder if he is doing this just to get more people to download the game. It seems he stands to make more money if more people download his game. According to one article he was already making $50,000 per day from this game and the main form of advertisement had come from an online gamer who had made a YouTube video claiming the game was great. Now with his announcement millions more have heard of the game and might have downloaded the game. Maybe with the extra downloads he will make even more money.

(135,425 posts)Said a bit sarcastically...but seriously, I've never heard of this game before reading this blurb, which I guess is suggestive of the fogey-esque circles in which I travel.
The last "bird furore" I remember was Angry Birds!
and I never tried that either. I used to be pretty good at pac man back in the day, we had an old game that came out of a pub. My daughter and I used to play a version called "cat pac man" the rule was when the cat got on the table you couldn't move him and you had to play through by memory. He'd get up and shift around to keep it fair. We loved it but it drove anybody else who tried to play crazy. You could never do challenges like that with an iphone.

(6,907 posts)he probably got tired of people asking for bug fixes and since it was very successful figured he ought to get out and sell it while the getting was good.
