China smog makes capital 'barely suitable' for life: report

Source: Reuters

[IMG][/IMG]

(Reuters) - Severe pollution in Beijing has made the Chinese capital "barely suitable" for living, according to an official Chinese report, as the world's second-largest economy tries to reduce often hazardous levels of smog caused by decades of rapid growth.

Pollution is a rising concern for China's stability-obsessed leaders, keen to douse potential unrest as affluent city dwellers turn against a growth-at-all-costs economic model that has tainted much of the country's air, water and soil.

The report, by the Beijing-based Social Science Academic Press and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, ranked the Chinese capital second worst out of 40 global cities for its environmental conditions, official media reported on Thursday.

China's smog has brought some Chinese cities to a near standstill, caused flight delays and forced schools to shut.

where some are annoyed because public officials are no longer allowed to smoke in areas like hospitals and government buildings. And they aren't allowed to buy cigarettes with public money any more, which messes up their business dealings. It is traditional to present a couple bottles of expensive hooch and a carton of luxury cigarettes as a starting point for negotiation, if accepted that means that the acceptor is open to being bribed.

Sorry but I don't remember where I read it. Maybe aljazeera rings a bell.

The smog was worse than any I've ever seen, including LA back in the 70's. On some days the visibility was severely reduced you couldn't see the sky at all. I think most people have figured out that smoking plus the smog is a death sentence.

while some people are raking in huge bucks, many people are suffering and dying because of it. The 25 cent an hour worker....well they can be replaced. Is there is no way to stop the slaughter for profit model? No way, it seems. TPP, XLoil pipes, BP, fukishima, all for profit at the expense of human health and welfare. I'm not on a rant, just very concerned at what the drive for huge corporate profit has created. Is my concern unfounded?

I don't think this is a recent problem. I asked our hosts about it and they said Beijing is located in a kind of basin where there's little air movement and the mountains to the north trap the smog.
