House GOP moves against health care law

Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are launching a new attack on the president’s health care law, just days after the law beat expectations by signing up more than 7 million Americans.

The House GOP scheduled a vote Thursday to change the law’s definition of full-time work from 30 hours a week to 40 hours a week. The result would be that fewer workers would get employer-sponsored health coverage.

Republicans say the change would give relief to businesses that have to cover full-time workers or pay a fine. They seized on a recent report saying the law will lead workers to cut their hours or leave the workforce. Democrats say “Obamacare” is starting to work.

The vote offers an early test of whether the law’s sign-up success will strengthen Democratic unity.

should be out there voting. The very concept of women's rights are being attacked, and they should be out there voting. The views that the republican party has demonstrated just how racist they are, and they should be out there voting. The destruction of Social Security and Medicare by the republicans should scare the heck out of seniors, and they should be out there voting.

The republicans have alienated so many groups. I do not agree with the assessment of the media pundits. They have been proven wrong time and time again, and I believe we will retain control of the Senate.

As long as we GOTV we will win

But there are those on DU and elsewhere who advocate sitting out the election, because our candidates aren't to their liking. I'm arguing with some of them right now on other threads, in fact.

We cannot assume that every person who should vote Dem will do so: we need to register them, get them to the polls, fight the Repub voter suppression laws, and yes, fight those among our own people who seek to suppress the vote as well.

we have today, and so many other problems.

It was less the SC decision that determined the election of 2000, and more of "just enough" people who thought it didn't matter if they sat out the election or voted third party.

A slim margin of victory enables rigging and theft, as we saw in 2000 and 2004. Larger margins like we had in 2008 and 2012 make it too risky for the Repubes to steal an election.

Turnout is the single biggest task for us this year.

The people who were leaving the workforce are those that wanted to retire or do something else but couldn't because they couldn't afford health insurance without getting it through their employer. Now they can. It was very clear in the report, but now the Republicans are just lying and saying these people are leaving because their jobs are being eliminated due to Obamacare.

If I could afford to I'd retire tomorrow so that I can enjoy a few years of sitting on a boat fishing while my health is still relatively good. Unfortunately I still have kids to help get through college and a not so impressive 401K, along with the obvious need for health insurance. The Affordable Care Act will certainly help (so long as we don't let GOPers dismantle the progress which has been made), but of course I'd love to see some form of Single Payer.

when I first started working in the corporate world, the work week was 35 hours for full time. If I worked over those 35 hours, I got OT as an Admin. Asst. My pay was based on a weekly, not hourly basis. It was extremely difficult then to even find part-time work. Buisnesses back in the 80s decided it was cheaper to pay two part-timers, without benefits, than a full time person. No, jobs going part-time now is nothing new.

So, so much has changed, and not for the better lately.

What universe do these people live in?

In this day and age, what worker would cut his income by 25% by reducing his hours from 40 to 30 hours, just because he could be covered either way? Not to mention an employee doesn't really have the power to dictate to his/her employer how many hours he is needed to that business.

Unbelievable.

Nobody would benefit more by this change than Walmart -- a company that already pays such low wages that its full time workers qualify for food stamps. Now they want government subsidies to help their employees purchase health insurance from the Marketplace so they can avoid being a good corporate citizen as ACA would require.
