Swedes to give six-hour workday a go
Source: thelocal.se
"We think it's time to give this a real shot in Sweden," Mats Pilhem, Left Party deputy mayor of Gothenburg, told The Local.
He explained that the municipal council would use two different departments - a test group and a control group, in essence. Staff in one section will cut down to six-hour days, while their colleagues in a different section stick to the ordinary seven-hour day. All employees will be given the same pay.
"We'll compare the two afterwards and see how they differ. We hope to get the staff members taking fewer sick days and feeling better mentally and physically after they've worked shorter days," he said.
Pilhelm said he hoped the move would create more jobs, as he had seen evidence that longer shifts entailed less efficiency. In some sectors, such as elderly care, the problem was not staff shortages, he claimed, but people working inefficiently over longer shifts.

(8,159 posts)Of course we can't do that! It would be considered socialist by the idiots in congress that work 3 days a month or so.

(6,323 posts)Game companies are notorious for white collar slavery. It's a common thing to work 60 hour weeks and if you don't your frowned upon, says the burnt out 3d artist. All for that glorious 40 hour per week paycheck and a credit in the game. What's that you say, the company surely shares the profits when they have big blockbusters, *sigh*, no.
I love what I do, I hate the companies that I work for.

To put out an independent game. We keep the cash we make, not some CEO. FFS.
I hear the GOP need a few good men.

(4,138 posts)The Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings series are the big ones, but they've put out dozens of games, and act as publishers for lots of smaller studios.
Lots of Canadian studios too, centered in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.
They treat their staff much better than their US counterparts. The ads between the 2 countries for staffing are like night and day.
USA, USA, USA, we know how to hit the bottom line!

(5,364 posts)They would never act in good faith here like in Sweden. Any jobs created would be deemed superfluous as the plutocrats here would use any efficiency savings as just another way of getting more done with the same staffing, or even getting more from less.
Our system is rotten to the core.

(163 posts)At 6 hours a day, the Swedes would still be working more hours than our Congress

I used to do 12 hour days for almost a year so I get where you're coming from. Just focus in that sweet, sweet overtime!

(2,083 posts)Overnights in a warehouse loading 5000+ boxes by hand for minimum wage. No AC in the summer and the winter so cold the boxes stick to the ground.
All followed by a lovely hour and a half drive back home. During winter driving through the ghetto wasn't so bad because at least the streets were more plowed than the forest preserve.
And I still had to get up for school.
Glad those days are over. Just keep looking for the next job and it will fall in your lap sooner than you expect.

(9,126 posts)Telecommuting should have taken off over thirty years ago. Want to save gas, electricity, overhead? Let your employees work from home. Yahoo took that away and there was a huge uproar. I work twice as hard from home than in the office. Why? Because I can schedule my life into my day, so I'll often be working later at night. If I'm efficient and get my stuff done, my time is my own. Plus, I appreciate the control of my schedule so I work hard not to muck it up. I have never ever been late for a deadline, and I never make excuses. All of my coworkers are the same.
When I worked in the office, I probably was productive 3 full hours of that day. I can't work strapped to a desk intensively for 10 hours straight and I doubt anyone can. There is so much time wasting to run out the clock.
For my employees, we discuss what needs to get done and then they do it. I find that good employees, when you trust and empower them, do a much better than anticipated job. Most managers who can't stand people working off site have authoritarian hangups or don't have anything to do to justify their paychecks other than looking over people's shoulders. A company could save a ton of money by streamlining its management but they hardly ever do.
Anyway, I wish the Swedes good luck but it will never happen here. The Reagan era sapped workers of any pride or say so and keeping unemployment high means management can do whatever they wish. This is not a good country for anyone but the wealthy.

But Sweden does not have a competitive market. It has monopoly capitalism, and so does the US.
