CLEVELAND, April 10 (Reuters) - An Ohio man who called his neighbor "Monkey Mama" as she held her adopted, disabled African-American children, and has smeared dog feces on their wheelchair ramp, was ordered by a judge to carry an "I AM A BULLY!" sign on a busy street this weekend.
Edmond Aviv, 62, who was accused of harassing his neighbor in the Cleveland suburb of South Euclid for more than a decade, pleaded no contest to fourth-degree disorderly conduct in March.
Meting out his punishment, South Euclid Municipal Court Judge Gayle Williams-Byers sentenced Aviv to spend Sunday, April 13, on a heavily trafficked intersection with the placard, which must be "large enough for a normal person to see the sign from 25 feet away."
The judge also sentenced Aviv to 15 days in jail, seven months' probation, 100 hours of community service, anger management classes and mental-health counseling, according to court records. Finally, he must publish in a local newspaper a letter of apology to Sandra Prugh, his neighbor of 15 years, the documents show.

(8,409 posts). . . is that, in order to have any effect, the person so sentenced must be capable of being shamed in the first place. I'm not so sure that's the case here.

(1,741 posts)This guys deserves a harsh punishment but I don't support scarlet letter sentences. It doesn't mean anything for the real a-holes and it's cruel and unusual for everyone else.

(2,674 posts)People who act this way do it because they know they can get away with it. I never felt bad about telling someone to be quiet at a play or to stop talking at a movie, same for seeing someone break-in a long line. I always speak up (my kids always say "Mom is acting out" . But if you don't let these people know that their behavior is unacceptable, they will keep doing it. And your speaking up will give other people courage to speak up, too. I once barged in my neighbors house and broke up a fight where a woman was beating her child. I went all the way on this one and pressed charges against the woman for family violence. Come to find out, all the neighbors were concerned, but too afraid to do anything. In the current case, I find it hard to believe that this type of bullying behavior could have gone on for so long without any action. Surely all the neighbors knew about it.

(429 posts)He harassed the family for 10 years. He committed a hate crime. But he gets a mere 15 days in jail, and 7 months of probation? Frankly, that ain't shyte!

(2,830 posts)seems kind of light for attempted murder and what basically amounts to terrorism for more than a decade.
Maybe there simply was enough evidence? IDK.
I think I would have put up some cameras...

(21,818 posts)His community service should consist of emptying and cleaning the bed-pans at a Cleveland hospital servicing mostly the poor. Supervised, of course, by the nurses/nurse's aides, who, more often than not, are women of color.
Let's see how tough he is after he has to empty some stranger's shit floating in a pan of piss, day in and day out for a while. The nurse's aides do it all the time.
And I'd love to be a fly on the wall seeing what those nurses will do to him if they hear him use a racial slur about them.
