Adoptive parents in Alabama have hit back at state Rep. Alvin Holmes' racist comments that white Republicans would force their child to have an abortion if the father was black.
The Democrat sensationally declared during an anti-abortion bill last month that he would mortgage his house and give legislators $100,000 if they showed him 'a whole bunch of whites that adopted blacks in Alabama'.
Holmes may need to head to the bank after 'a whole bunch' of parents who've adopted children from other races turned up outside the Alabama State House for a rally yesterday.
'We will never move forward away from racism as long as we have leaders holding on to the past and turning everything into a race issue,' Beverly Owings, who has adopted four children with her husband, including a biracial daughter, said at the rally.

(6,785 posts)his claim that "White Republicans would force their child to have an abortion if the father was black" is probably factually accurate.

(31,849 posts)let's just be outraged by that "racist" statement.
While I know one white republican family that adopted a Black infant (who is now a racially confused, hot mess), I know several white republican family whose daughters are rumored to have had abortions not long after the sneaking relationships/hook-ups with a Black kid.

(6,785 posts)I don't know any white Republicans that adopted any black kids, but I know of several that have suddenly done a very temporary about-face on the immorality of abortion.
I hope he refuses to apologize or back down. I'm pretty sure his seat is safe.

(16,104 posts)regarding what Rep. Holmes was talking about was when the Alabama Legislature was passing even more restrictions on women's reproductive health clinics. Restrictions that will - here is that word again - disproportionately affect minority women and their right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.
The Christian perspective (rationalization) of the Alabama legislation is that these unwanted babies will be in high demand down here in Alabama. And so many Alabama families are just waiting to adopt unwanted babies.
Alvin Holmes pointed out this here is still Alabama.
And in "a state of 4,000,000 people a handful on the capital steps does not constitute a whole bunch."
Alvin Holmes is a bit bombastic, a true blue Democrat, and the issue here is a woman's right to choice regarding her health and reproductive freedom.

I think the guy was necessarily and truthfully harsh about "pro life hypocrites" but c'mon gambling his house on this offer. Pffft he's so out of touch with the real world.

(23,340 posts)Holmes is observing the actual behavior of most would-be white adoptive parents.
Would-be white adoptive parents have been going offshore for many years to adopt non-black infants. Asians were the preferred other-race-of-choice. Same race kids from Russia and Eastern Europe were also very popular. It depends a lot on the ever-changing market in the world of international adoptions. There is no great adoption market for African-American kids in the US.
