Shootings reported at 2 Jewish-related sites in Overland Park

Source: KCTV

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Overland Park police are working shootings at two separate Jewish-related locations.

A shooting was reported about 1 p.m. Sunday at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, according to an Overland Park Fire Department spokesman. This happened at Lewis and Shirley White Theatre inside the center.

Teens were auditioning for KC Superstar auditions and parents are frantically trying to get to their children.

A second shooting was reported at Village Shalom, which is an assisted living center at 5500 West 123rd St.

Worried relatives of residents tell KCTV5 that Village Shalom has been placed on lockdown.

There were no immediate word on injuries or a suspect description.

Phyllis Cantor, who is undergoing rehabilitation at Village Shalom, said she heard the sound of sirens. She said many police officers are at the scene and there focus appears to be on a white car in the parking lot.

And what makes it even worse is I can already hear the NRA proclaiming--if that 15 year old was carrying an assault rifle he would be safe. I don't feel safe. I feel like barricading myself in my home.

Official: 3 dead after shooting at Kansas City-area Jewish center

http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/13/us/kansas-jewish-center-shooting/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

CNN affiliate KSHB reported that there were two separate shootings at Jewish centers in the area -- one at the community center and one at an assisted living facility.

The FBI is at the scene working with local authorities investigating shootings that occurred at two locations, FBI spokesman Joel Sealer said.

At the time of the shooting, auditions for a dance competition and dance recitals were being held at the community center, KSHB said.

"This was a community center full of young teens, and they were on lockdown after the shots started. Some of these kids were taken into locker rooms and told to lay on the floor as the shots rang out," KSHB reporter Lisa Benson told CNN.

Also, it's now on CNN's tv channel...right at the top of the hour.

Shooter was going around inside asking people if they were Jewish; he was an older guy in his seventies, the rabbi assumes that he was a neo-nazi. After he shot up the JCC, he drove over to the Jewish retirement village and killed an older woman there.

This is terrifying.

This is awful, awful, but given his age, there are two thoughts that cross my mind:

1. He's not totally in charge of his faculties; and/or

2. This kind of hatred, or at least this kind of expression, may be more prevalent among older people, and as they pass, this kind of hate crime will be much less common.

My sincere condolences to the relatives and to the KC Jewish community.

Frazier Glenn Miller, Longtime Anti-Semite, Arrested in Kansas Jewish Community Center Murders

http://www.splcenter.org/blog/2014/04/13/frazier-glenn-miller-longtime-anti-semite-arrested-in-kansas-jewish-community-center-murders/

Frazier Glenn Miller, 73, of Aurora, Mo., was arrested today for the murder of three people at two separate Jewish Community Centers in Overland Park, Kan. Miller, who was arrested using the alias Frazier Glenn Cross, has been in the movement nearly his entire life. Miller is the former “grand dragon” of the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, which he founded and ran in the 1980s before being sued by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for operating an illegal paramilitary organization and using intimidation tactics against African Americans.

After subsequently forming another Klan group, the White Patriot Party, he was found in criminal contempt and sentenced to six months in prison for violating the court settlement. He went underground while his conviction was under appeal but was caught by the FBI with a weapons cache in Missouri. He served three years in federal prison after being indicted on weapons charges and for plotting robberies and the assassination of SPLC founder Morris Dees. As part of a plea bargain, Miller testified against other Klan leaders in a 1988 sedition trial.

Miller is a raging anti-Semite who has posted more than 12,000 times on Vanguard News Network (VNN), whose slogan is “No Jews, Just Right.” VNN founder Alex Linder has openly advocated “exterminating” Jews since December 2009. Miller, a close partner to Linder, has called Jews “swarthy, hairy, bow-legged, beady-eyed, parasitic midgets.” Miller is also one of VNN’s largest donors and he printed and distributed thousands of copies of VNN’s newsletter, The Aryan Alternative.

23. Did 'Nazi' Gunman Single Out Jews for Death in Suburban Kansas City Rampage?
Sun Apr 13, 2014, 08:32 PM
Apr 2014

I've posted from the Jewish Daily Forward from time to time for it's pro-labor stories etc.

http://forward.com/articles/196506/did-nazi-gunman-single-out-jews-for-death-in-subur/?

A smirking gunman who reportedly shouted Nazi slogans opened fire at a Jewish community center and an old-age home in a suburb of Kansas City, killing three people.

The gunman, said to be an older man, singled out Jewish victims for death, Rabbi Herbert Mandl, a chaplain with the Overland Park Police Department, told CNN.

“Asking someone if you are Jewish before shooting sounds very much like a hate crime,” Mandl said.

Police said two people were killed at the JCC of Greater Kansas City, where children were auditioning for a musical. Despite Mandl’s assertion, the JCC victims were identified as a churchgoing teenage boy and his grandfather.

FULL story at link.

24. KC Star says two of the victims were members of United Methodist Church...

Apr 2014
Two of the victims were a 14-year-old boy and his grandfather who attend the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, said church spokeswoman Cathy Bien.

The Rev. Adam Hamilton, the church’s senior pastor, shared the news with church members at the beginning of the evening Palm Sunday service. He said he had been talking to the victims’ family in the hours after the shooting, and they asked him to go through with the Sunday evening worship service.

The lights were lowered as Hamilton asked members to pray for the family.

Read more here:

From the reports, it's still not clear to me whether or not the gunman ever actually entered the community center. The boy and his grandfather were shot in the parking lot, at their vehicle. Another man reported having his car window shot out, as he sat in his vehicle, but the bullets missed hitting him.

Go to any gun show. Read the bumper stickers and 'reading material.'

Gun shows are where you get ideas and the firepower to back them up.

This absolutely makes me sick. This happened out in Johnson County, Ks which is about 20 minutes from my house. There are several large synogogues out there.

But everyone in the whole area uses that center.

That man had been causing anit-semitic trouble and anti anybody white trouble for decades.

I am getting so sick of this pro gun stuff. This is what happens when everybody and their dog gets a gun. And this on top of the 12 shootings out by Grandview where that psycho is pulling up beside people and shooting into their cars.

Enough is enough.

His rant on this is amazing and I think he's onto something besides a comedy routine. If bullets cost $5K each, these hate-filled nutcases couldn't rave about "taking their guns away" and 2nd amendment rights.
