Vice Principal Saved from Korea ferry found hanged
Source: Kansas City Star via AP
SEOUL, South Korea Police say a high school vice principal who had been rescued from a sinking South Korean ferry has been found hanging from a tree.
The news of the death came Friday as rescuers scrambled to find hundreds of people still missing from the ferry and feared dead. The passengers included 325 second-year students from Danwon High School heading to a southern island on a four-day trip.
A police officer says the vice principal, identified only by his surname Kang, was found dead on the island of Jindo where rescued passengers have taken shelter. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity citing department rules. He didn't elaborate.

Officials have confirmed 28 deaths. But that number is expected to rise sharply. About 270 people are missing.

(5,455 posts)There are a lot of extremely distraught parents, although a suicide would be tragic, I'm hoping it wasn't murder.

(5,455 posts)It only says the vice principal was found hanging from a tree.
It does not say he hanged himself and it does not say he was murdered. It doesn't say very much at all, so not ruling out the possibility he was murdered by distraught parents is not conspiracy theory, it is speculation without facts, something we here at DU are VERY good at.
On edit: I responded to you before I saw the update in post 7. The suicide is a tragedy

Police officers reportedly found a suicide note in Mr Kang's wallet.
Yonhap reported the note read: "Surviving alone is too painful while 200 remain unaccounted for. I take full responsibility. I pushed ahead with the school trip.

(16,191 posts)There are a lot of different reasons for it, but many come down to cultural attributes that encourage suicide to avoid shame. It's tragic that the principal went this route, but it's not exactly a surprise either.

(22,000 posts)It is tragic and I'm sure given the fact that so many students have been lost he felt guilty about being rescued. The coverage is essentially wall to wall on all the news all day here. Children's Day is coming up in two weeks and there are usually festivals (it is an actual holiday here), but all of them have been canceled according to my wife.
