Chile to end private education
Apr 18,2014

SANTIAGO, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Chilean Education Minister Nicolas Eyzaguirre Thursday reaffirmed the government's commitment to ending private education.

"The pursuit of profit is not a good objective for educational institutions. It is not a good ally of a good education," Eyzaguirre told a press conference.

The administration of President Michelle Bachelet, who took office in March, has proposed an ambitious overhaul of the education system to provide affordable, quality education, as demanded by a national student movement launched in 2011.

The government's proposed reforms basically call for greater public spending on education, free primary education, and an end to state-subsidies of private schools and to profit-oriented universities.

1. An end to state subsidies of private education, not an end to private education.

Their private schools would be like ours -- not subsidized by the state.

regardless of the misleading headline.

Eliiminating public subsidies to for-profit schools at any level sounds good to me.

to be a public subsidy to private schools...not to mention endorsement of a religion

I consider charter schools to be a subsidy

I consider public funds used to support "amateur" collegiate sports to be a subsidy

Etc...

Let's face it. The profit model does not encourage progress...it encourages profits.

(added on edit) Let's make a special, most heinous case for tax breaks for "non-profit" lobbying to encourage for-profit education.

20. Well said, I agree completely. To our horror, charter schools were voted in here by an initiative.

Media and other groups supporting charters continue to try to defund the public schools for their profit.

In the U.S.A. we do subsidize private education through tax credits, text books, basic skills teachers, etc.

Chile: Students set to win free higher education
Tuesday, April 1, 2014
By Ray Polglaze

Newly re-elected President Michelle Bachelet has reaffirmed her election promise to introduce free tertiary education in Chile — one of the demands of the country’s powerful student movement.
In elections in December, the New Majority coalition of centre-left parties won a majority in both the Chilean Congress and Senate. Bachelet, the New Majority candidate, was elected president.

On March 11, Bachelet began her second term as president, having served as president from 2006-2010. She replaced right-wing president Sebastian Pinera.
Bachelet and her education minister Nicolas Eyzaguirre have moved quickly to reaffirm their stated education commitments, and begun consultations about their implementation. A new law has been announced.

Bachelet has reaffirmed her commitment to granting free higher education for the most vulnerable 70% of Chilean students, or 840 000 students, within four years. Under the plan, all 1.2 million students will be granted free tertiary education within six years.

Chilean students have been paying some of the highest higher education fees in the world — 50% higher, on average, than Australian students. They have been paying more than 75% of the costs of their higher education, which is the highest student contribution of any OECD country.

9. "Mom" above is mistaken . .

In writing . . [Chile's] "private schools would be like ours -- not subsidized by the state."
Ours are highly subsidized at every level of education. At the university level the feds
guarantee student loans which amounts to billions in subsidies each year.
That is why the banksters invest in for-profit schools and why they prey on
vulnerable folks by saddling them with crippling student loans that can never be
repaid.

"Studies have shown that people who take online classes are going to default on their student loans at exponentially higher rates than the general population. This is perfectly all right with online universities like University of Phoenix because they still get the government money to have these students, and then they just sell the debt to a debt collector. It creates such huge profits for them that they got investments from Goldman Sachs. [...]"

Mom, please do not let this happen to your family & friends!

is listening to these privatize people scream about how bad the public schools are and how much we need to give them money so they can guarantee a good education.

For some privileged few.

On our side we provide food for lunches for the children out of humanitarian motives and don't get so much as a thanks. Like having a dog that tries to bite you when you feed it.

But if we didn't provide the food, the children would go hungry. The noise machine is just overwhelming and capitalizes on the lack of comprehension of the masses.

I wonder how the president feels about this.
