Covert Inquiry by F.B.I. Rattles 9/11 Tribunals

WASHINGTON — Two weeks ago, a pair of F.B.I. agents appeared unannounced at the door of a member of the defense team for one of the men accused of plotting the 9/11 terrorist attacks. As a contractor working with the defense team at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, the man was bound by the same confidentiality rules as a lawyer. But the agents wanted to talk.

They asked questions, lawyers say, about the legal teams for Ramzi bin al-Shibh, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and other accused terrorists who will eventually stand trial before a military tribunal at Guantánamo. Before they left, the agents asked the contractor to sign an agreement promising not to tell anyone about the conversation.

With that signature, Mr. bin al-Shibh’s lawyers say, the government turned a member of their team into an F.B.I. informant.

The F.B.I.’s inquiry became the focus of the pretrial hearings at Guantánamo this week, after the contractor disclosed it to the defense team. It was a reminder that, no matter how much the proceedings at the island military prison resemble a familiar American trial, the invisible hand of the United States government is at work there in ways unlike anything seen in typical courtrooms.

And of course Mr. Obama is powerless to stop it.

It's Congress's fault, or something. All I know is that he's powerless.

is that all those DUers screaming about Snowden and how he's a coward and anti-American are not outraged at this. I guess it doesn't fit in their worldview (i.e. Snowden = evil, Obama = innocent and righteous)

in the U.S.A. I recognize it is difficult to recognize if one is of the privileged class. Someone needs to yank off their rose colored glasses in some cases, or the thick veil from their shuttered eyes in other instances.

As if Snowden, the Personality, is the issue of concern. It would be hilarious if the willful denial weren't so contemptible. Anytime a comment or media appearance is made from Snowden, the frequent response centers around the notion that "Snowden is all about Snowden".. and so ensues the usual pedestrian flaming which is general keeping with anti-Russian propagandizing of their Police State apparatus/policies and thug politicians etc, completely and disingenuously ignoring the institutionalization of the Police State Apparatus here in the U.S.A., which existed to a certain extent long before 9/11, but finally became institutionalized vis a vis all of the renditions of the 'Patriot Act', strip and search, surveillance etc.

Cognitive dissonance is a disease that is difficult to overcome. That difficulty lies in taking the time, which many have little luxury to enjoy, to educate oneself. However with the ease of access to documents, articles, virtual books and videos one can learn. People are lazy to their own peril.

Our freedoms have been grotesquely eroded against the rah! rah! USA! USA! backdrop. It infuriates me.The re-education of Americans by TPTB is working....sadly.

I didn't attempt to bring that, more fuller dimension into the current discussion as I was actually addressing our democratic party community, or more specifically our discussion board "membership" as it were. Our milieu of functionaries, activists citizens, general party supporters, analysts, journalists and every day folk.

I quite agree with you and should have been more clear... thanks for keeping me on my toes!

And terrorists, made me sick.

This poor guy was sent to Guantanamo after he was told that if he didn't say what they told him to say, his five yer old daughter would be raped. Really gruesome and scary:

It could be the guy that the OP is centering on is a far more legitimate target of our ruthlessness. But so many of these people were just at the wrong place in the wrong time.

it's just what totalitarian fascist police states do, y'know? 9/11 changed the Constitution into a goddamned piece of paper!

-90% Jimmy

PS - for the historical record, GWB may never have compared the Constitution to a goddamned piece of paper. I hate inaccuracy. It reminds me of Fox News and MSM Agenda Driven Corporate Propaganda.

accused of plotting the 911 attack, my initial thought was that they were knocking on Dick Cheney's door. Then I realized that they had used the word 'accused'.

This is not breaking news. This is an investigative report/analysis of an event that happened last week.
