Crimean Tatar Leader Barred From Crimea Until 2019

Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Dzhemilev has been barred from entering Crimea for the next five years.

A spokeswoman for the Mejlis, the Crimean Tatars' assembly, said Dzhemilev was informed he was persona non grata until 2019 as he crossed to mainland Ukraine early on April 22.

The order came three days after he was briefly detained at a checkpoint while entering Crimea.

Dzhemilev has accused Crimea's new pro-Russian government of overseeing what he says is a campaign of repression against Crimean Tatars since the peninsula was annexed by Russia last month.

Crimean Tatar Leader Is Barred From Entering Russian Territory

MOSCOW
—Russia has barred the leader of the Crimean Tatars, a Muslim minority group that overwhelmingly opposed Moscow's recent annexation of Crimea, from entering Russian territory for the next five years, the Tatar assembly said Tuesday.

The order comes as the Kremlin moves to cement control over the region it annexed last month and suggests it aims to prevent widespread dissent to Russian rule from emerging. Crimean Tatars make up about 12% of the region's population of two million people.

In a statement, the Tatar assembly said its leader, Mustafa Dzhemilev, was handed an order early Tuesday as he and his deputy drove out of the breakaway region toward Kiev telling him he couldn't return to Russian soil until 2019.

"If in recent time, diplomats and representatives of international organizations have been denied entry into the territory of Crimea and then they hand out this 'decision,' it is nothing more than a sign of how 'civilized' a state we are dealing with," the statement quoted Mr. Dzhemilev as saying.

2. This isn't the only time he's been deported by "mother Russia"

The first time was when he was six. So much for a "kinder gentler" Russia.

4. I thought Putin just announced some sort of aide package for Crimean Tatars and other groups

who had been oppressed under Stalin. I didn't think Putin would really mess with the Tatars because he doesn't want the Muslim world to have a second reason to oppose him (Chechens being the first) and because he's trying to improve his relationship with Turkey. Hmmm......

7. Yeah, but dirtbags look out after their own interests. The Tatars are only about 300k in number

there. Offering them a good aide package would be relatively inexpensive and treating them well would go a long way for Putin's relations with Muslims internationally. Plus, the Tatars are Ottoman Empire and Turkey holds the keys to Dardanelles and Bosphorus. Putin's Black Sea Fleet won't do him much good if he pisses off Turkey and can't get out of the Black Sea.

But Putin is spiteful. Any that DARE to question his authority can expect nothing but heartache.

9. The bulk of the Tatars were deported by Stalin and have not returned

they were never allowed to return at all until the 80's. A couple hundred thousand of them were loaded onto boxcars and moved to Central Asia by the USSR in 44. Turkey has not and will not forget that, ever.
