The Teen Pregnancy Rate Has Dropped 50 Percent in Two Decades

Source: National Journal

A new report finds teen pregnancy, birth, and abortion rates at a historic low.

By Sophie Novack

Teens are getting smarter about sex.

About 6 percent of female teens (ages 15 to 19) became pregnant in 2010, according to a report released Monday by the reproductive health nonprofit, the Guttmacher Institute.

That's down 15 percent from two years prior, and a decrease of 51 percent from the highest level in 1990.

Older teens—those 18 to 19—made up 69 percent of teen pregnancies. This age group had a substantially lower rate of pregnancy despite a higher portion reporting that they have had sex, which the report says is likely due to more effective means of contraception and improved usage.

near the economic opportunity their parents and grandparents had, and there is little hope of anything in the future...

" target="_blank">Here.

While I realize they may not be deep thinkers, during the years of the Great Depression it looks like the same sort of thing happened, but without the enlightenment about sex and protections we have today. There are also some parallels between the rise of inequality from 1920 to 1930, so perhaps it is a combination of training and the economy...

I teach Health and we are required to teach Sex Ed. While we are encouraged to stress abstinence as the only absolute guarantee against STI's and pregnancy, we are also required to give accurate information on all methods of birth control. These kids have been running around thinking you can't get pregnant the first time you have sex, or if the girl's on top, or (get this) you put an olive in your vagina(!), or if you're standing up. The list goes on and on. This is what we have reaped after way too many years of "Don't!" being the only thing we were allowed to teach. Ignorance never has solved anything, but the wing-nuts keep thinking it will. It's truly sad.

not just the US who has by far the highest rate in the developed world. Coincidentally, its the one country that spent billions on abstinence programs.
