Eric Holder Offers FBI Help For Kidnapped Nigerian Girls

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is offering to send FBI agents to help rescue more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram, a senior Justice Department source told The Huffington Post on Monday.
Holder has also ordered an intelligence assessment of Boko Haram, which the United States designated as a terrorist organization in November 2013. The group, whose name means "Western education is sin," receives training from al Qaeda and its affiliates.
"Let me be clear," Secretary of State John Kerry said Saturday during a trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo. "The kidnapping of hundreds of children by Boko Haram is an unconscionable crime, and we will do everything possible to support the Nigerian government to return these young women to their homes."
On April 14, members of Boko Haram invaded a boarding school in Nigeria, pulled 276 girls from their beds and packed them into trucks. At least 53 girls have escaped, while the rest are allegedly being sold as brides to local militants for $12, according to the girls' relatives.

(5,764 posts)...this is one of those situatios where nobody is served by leaking this data publicly in advance. "Hey kidnappers! The FBI might be coming to get those girls you took, so make sure not to move them or guard them more heavily or anything... 'kay?"
Sheesh. Publish this stuff *after* it won't do damage.

Still doesn't mean he will accept what they offer, tho.

(45,850 posts)It is unclear whether Nigeria will accept help from the FBI. CNN reported that Nigeria has not yet asked for help from the United States in finding the girls, possibly because they do not want "visible American forces in their country."

(45,850 posts)that may be due to Boko Harum threatening to attack the Southern oil producing regions as opposed to this mass abduction which happened in the Northern Muslim majority region
s reports filtered in Wednesday that gunmen in Bama were once again shooting people and setting homes on fire, Boko Haram released a video statement saying it plans to widen its reach, to attack oil refineries in the south and continue its assault on Muslim clerics that dont agree with its harsh interpretation of Islamic law.

(45,850 posts)and realistically it would be difficult because right now Boko Harum is operating in the Muslim majority North but the oil producing region is in the Christian majority South, so thankfully logistics aren't on their side-they're 'good' at hit and runs against children's schools, but to attack the refineries it would as you said "get real" for them, they would actually have to defend themselves against other armed adults, not as easy as taking unarmed little girls prisoner

It is also hoped that these measures of goodwill will be reciprocated in the future in the form of cooperation in investigations that are important to us.

(27,581 posts)White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama was being briefed as his national security team was monitoring developments.
Earlier, a video emerged of the leader of the Boko Haram group saying the militants intended to sell the girls.
They were taken from a school in the northern state of Borno on 14 April.
