Shooting in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, kills three, wounds one
Source: CBS News
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Three people were killed and a fourth person was wounded in a shooting at an oceanfront motel in Myrtle Beach, one of South Carolina's most popular tourist destinations.
The shootings took place around 11 p.m. Saturday in front of crowds of tourists at the Bermuda Sands Motel along the beach's new boardwalk, Myrtle Beach Police Capt. David Knipes said at a news conference.
Officers draped towels over the balcony of a breezeway just outside the doors to the rooms of the motel to shield two of the bodies from people on nearby Ocean Boulevard.
Police have not said whether they have any suspects or what led to the shooting.

No worries, citizens. Only three this time. Why, that's barely news!

(14,157 posts)South Carolina is a "shall issue" concealed carry permit state. No permit is required to purchase rifles, shotguns, or handguns. South Carolina also has "Castle Doctrine" legal protection of the use of deadly force against intruders into one's home, business, or car.[3] It is unlawful to carry a firearm onto private or public school property or into any publicly owned building except interstate rest areas without express permission. Open carry is not allowed, but no permit is required to carry a loaded handgun in the console or glove compartment of a car. As of September 12, 2008, states with which South Carolina has reciprocity are: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.[4][5]
South Carolina law also now supports a "stand your ground" philosophy under the "Protection of Persons and Property Act" SECTION 16-11-440(C) with the following language. The act was apparently ruled non-retroactive in State v. Dickey.[6]
A person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and who is attacked in another place where he has a right to be, including, but not limited to, his place of business, has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his ground and meet force with force, including deadly force, if he reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent death or great bodily injury to himself or another person or to prevent the commission of a violent crime as defined in Section 16160.
South Carolina also has the alter-ego clause with respect to the defense of others, under which a person who uses deadly force to defend a friend, relative or bystander will be allowed the benefit of the plea of self-defense if that plea would have been available to the person requiring assistance if they had been the one who used deadly force. In other words, the person intervening is deemed to stand in the shoes of the person on whose behalf he is intervening. If that individual had the right to defend himself, then the intervening party is also protected by that right. To claim self-defense, a person has to be in a place they have a legal right to be, not be involved in any illegal activity, must not have started the confrontation, and must be in imminent danger of death or serious bodily harm.

(651 posts)....Was a place to avoid even before this. It really is a shit hole, backward place. The collective general populace is as stupid as a box of rocks. Sure, Charleston may look pretty down on the river and Kiawah Island is full of wealthy gated communities to keep the low life away but just a few blocks off the tourist areas there's abject third world poverty. It is not in the bible belt, it is the bible tampon.
are you done bashing SC. or do you have more insults to throw around to the "collective box of rocks". Your post is disgusting and a disservice to the posters of DU that live in SC.
So perhaps you should remove the tampons from your ears, they seem to be blocking thoughtful, considerate dialog.

(38,187 posts)It is always so demoralizing to hear people on DU talk about us like we are not even human. There are Democrats in these red Bible Belt states too. Not all of us fit whatever preconceived stereotype some on DU seem to have, but they never seem to learn that, for some odd reason.

"My" red state is Oklahoma. Some DUers really, really HATE Oklahoma... lol.
I like Oklahoma. The politics is horrible, but that is not my whole life.
There are some wonderful people here.

(29,414 posts)For some, politics defines everything to do with a state, and so that way they don't ever have to set foot (willingly) into such a state. The rest of us don't have politics on our minds 60/60/24/7/365/decades/centuries like the rest of these bash-happy yahoos. Thankfully!

(8,846 posts)I hate the place, except for Charleston.
My father lives in Greater Myrtle Beach, and I loathe the couple of times a year I have to go visit him. I had him moved down to Florida a couple of years ago, and was so happy I'd never have to step foot in that shithole again.
Then he moved back to be with his fellow redneck bible thumpers. I guess he found out that was the only place that would accept his extremist views.

UBC. Open NICS for all private sales no cost. Tax credits for weapon safety devices and safes. Fully fund and enforce existing laws and increase penalty for weapon use in a crime. Prosecute parents for misuse or neglect if a child is hurt or killed with an unsecure weapon. Limit magazines to 20 rounds and what fits in the grip of a handgun.

(54,770 posts)handle the transaction. But gun owners don't care enough to do that as long as they can get a fistful of cash in a back alley. Private sales, not through an FFL, should be illegal at the very least. True responsible gun owners should be demanding that.

But, the racist rednecks hate it, and have tried to get it banned for years. Horror stories (mostly bullshit) circulate among the residents year round about rape, pillage and plunder.
