(14,779 posts)It is rare to have a Storm between November and June, thus the season "Begins" June 1st, but they have been named Storms before that date:
In 1978 you had an unnamed and unnumbered Tropical Storm between January 18 and 22:
http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/general/lib/lib1/nhclib/mwreviews/1978.pdf
In 1981 you had Tropical Storm "Arlene" May 1-9.
http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/general/lib/lib1/nhclib/mwreviews/1981.pdf
In 1992 you had your first tropical wave in April, but no named storms till August (Which was Andrew).
http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/general/lib/lib1/nhclib/mwreviews/1992.pdf
In 2003 Tropical Storm "Ana" lasted from April 20-24, 2004
http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/general/lib/lib1/nhclib/mwreviews/2003.pdf
And after the end of the "Season" in November:
For Example Hurricane "Lili" in 1984 between December 12 and 24
Occasionally they go past December 31st:
For example in 2005 Tropical Storm "Zeta" Started on December 30th and lasted till January 6. 2006:
http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/general/lib/lib1/nhclib/mwreviews/2005.pdf
2005 was the record year for Hurricane, it is the only time we went through the entire alphabet and had to start using Greek Alphabetical names, thus the last six 2005 storms (Which included TWO Hurricanes) used Greek Alphabetical names and that includes the LAST Hurricane in 2005:
Hurricane "Epsilon" lasted from November 29 to December 8, 2005
Reports on all Atlantic Hurricanes since 1872:

Now the latest HURRICANE to form was on December 30th, 1954. It was called "Alice" for it was not ruled to be a Tropical Storm till January 2. 1955 and thus was called the first storm of 1955, instead of the last storm of 1954:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Alice_(December_1954)
In January 1938, you had Hurricane 1 formed In January (present naming system not adopted till 1954):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1938_Atlantic_hurricane_season#Hurricane_One
You also had a Sub-tropical storms in January 1978 (Thus only four storms in January, Hurricane 1 of 1938, Hurricane Alice in 1954-55, A subtropical storm in 1978 and Tropical Storm Zeta in 2005).
