Testimony: Ex-Va. governor received other loans

Source: AP-Chron.com

By LARRY O'DELL,

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell received $150,000 in loans to help bail out struggling vacation rental properties before he borrowed money from a wealthy businessman, McDonnell's former brother-in-law testified Monday.

The prosecution called Michael Uncapher to the stand to help paint the former governor and his wife, Maureen, as a financially desperate couple. Prosecutors say money troubles from the Virginia Beach properties owned by McDonnell and his sister was one of the motivating factors in the gifts-for-favors scandal that resulted in a 14-count indictment against the McDonnells.

Uncapher testified that MoBo Realty borrowed $100,000 from McDonnell's father, John McDonnell, in 2007 and $50,000 from Dr. Paul Davis, a radiologist, in 2009. Two loans totaling $70,000 from former Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams followed in 2012, Uncapher and other witnesses have testified.

In all, the McDonnells are accused of accepting more than $165,000 in gifts and secret loans from Williams in exchange for promoting his company's products, primarily the nutritional supplement Anatabloc.

There's a perverse pleasure in seeing some other state's governor on trial.

I'm not sure anyone from elsewhere appreciates what a clean government state we have been thus far. I'm 60yo and cannot recall a BREATH of financial scandal in my lifetime about any governor of either party. Cause to celebrate as this solidifies VA turning BLUE for the foreseeable future.

THANKS, BOB AND MAUREEN, YOU DONE GOOD!

Now, the only former Illinois governor in jail is Blagojevich. (I was hoping that he would become Ryan's cellmate. Still, Fast Eddie Vrdolyak was on the same cell block.)

Thank you for posting this. It wasn't that long ago that this gentleman was being mentioned as a potential republican presidential candidate. His current troubles get far too little attention in the media these days. It's an important story, and people should be paying attention, close attention.

And everyone knows what you are talking about.

Maureen has been run over by the bus repeatedly - loveless marriage, lusting after Johnnie Williams, a "nutbag" according her Chief of Staff, and possibly hoarding gifts in nooks and crannies in the Exec Mansion- everyday is "What happened today!?!"

I literally hear it in the grocery store or in random strangers talking at the gas station.
