Actor, comedian Robin Williams dies at 63
Source: Marin Independent Journal
Robin Williams, the former College of Marin student who rose to stardom as a comedian and Oscar-winning actor, was found dead Monday at his home in Tiburon.
The cause of death is pending, but the preliminary investigation suggests he died of suicide by asphyxiation, said sheriff's Lt. Keith Boyd, assistant county coroner.
Williams had turned 63 on July 21.

On Monday (August 11) the actor's reps officially confirmed that Robin Williams is not dead. He joins the long list of celebrities who have been victimized by this hoax. He's still alive and well, stop believing what you see on the Internet, they said.
Some fans have expressed anger at the fake report saying it was reckless, distressing and hurtful to fans of the much loved actor. Others say this shows his extreme popularity across the globe.

(15,715 posts)Oscar winner and comedian Robin Williams died this morning at 63. While his publicist wouldnt confirm that it was a suicide, they did issue this statement. Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.
Williams, who won an Oscar for his supporting role in Good Will Hunting, will reprise his role as Theodore Roosevelt in the third installment of Night at the Museum this December. He had recently signed on to reprise his beloved role as Mrs. Doubtfire in a sequel to be directed by Chris Columbus and was last seen opposite Annette Bening in the indie film The Face of Love.

Too soon, dammit. WAY too soon.
He was like a machine gun of comedy. Just rapid-fire. It was that fast. Just nuts! You could NOT keep up with him. Wasn't possible to keep up with him. Maybe only Jonathan Winters could keep up with him. Jonathan Winters was one of Robin Williams' idols as I recall. And almost a classic sad clown type. I hope he finds his way quickly to the Heavenly Friars Club or something - where the other comedic greats, like George Burns and Belushi and Berle and Jonathan Winters and the Marx Brothers and all the old Vaudeville gents are.

(11,860 posts)By chance, many years ago... maybe twenty, my husband and I were waiting for a delayed flight from San Francisco... coming into Philadelphia on Christmas Eve. We were in a crowd of about thirty people at one in the morning sitting on the floor at the gate. One of those waiting was Robin Williams and a couple of body guards. I don't think that many recognized him. He was heavily bearded with a knit cap pulled way down almost over his eyes. At one point during the three hour delay, I caught his eye and he raised his coffee cup in a toast. I raised mine in return and averted my eyes. It was painfully obvious that he was almost desperate to not be recognized.
Later, after the flight landed, as we waited for my sister-in-laws luggage to come down the belt... one of his body guards came up to my husband and asked if we were going into Philly. Robin offered us a ride in his limo. We declined and that was that. I will never forget his kindness and his immense talent. Just wanted to share one of life's' little unexpected moments.
Sleep well Robin.

(15,480 posts)I could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul," fellow actor-comedian Steve Martin said on Twitter.
Dubbed the funniest man alive by Entertainment Weekly in 1997, Williams brought audiences hours of laughter, putting his imaginative spin on characters in film and television. He was lauded for his serious roles as well, winning a best supporting actor Oscar for his performance as Sean Maguire, the therapist who counsels Matt Damons math genius in Good Will Hunting (1997), and receiving nominations for The Fisher King (1991), Dead Poets Society (1989) and Good Morning, Vietnam (1987).
Born in Chicago in 1951, Williams became one of only two students accepted into John Housemans prestigious acting program at Juilliard, the other being Christopher Reeve, who became a lifelong friend.
Williams gained fame as Mork, the bizarre, suspenders-sporting alien on the sitcom Mork & Mindy, a spinoff from Happy Days. Williams departed from the script so often that producers intentionally left blank moments on page for Williams to have space to indulge his ad-libbing genius.

Wow, it was excruciating to watch his character basically disintegrate as you watch. He played a salesman whose life is falling apart and he just can't catch a break. I was blown away by how good he was in that role and have never forgotten it. After that when he played a more serious part I was never surprised at how good he was.
