Mo'Ne Davis becomes first girl to throw a shutout in LLWS

BY SI WIRE

Posted: Fri Aug. 15, 2014

Mo'Ne Davis dominated in her team's opening game in the Little League World Series on Friday, becoming the first girl to throw a shutout in LLWS history. Davis' Philadelphia team - the Taney Dragons - beat a Tennessee team 4-0, and she struck out eight batters.

Davis is the 18th girl to play in the Little League World Series but the first to throw a shutout. She also threw a shutout in the Mid-Atlantic Final win that sent her team to the LLWS. She was hitting 70 mph with her fastball and allowed just two hits.

Earlier in the week, Davis challenged Dodgers All-Star Clayton Kershaw to a pitch-off, which he accepted.

Mamie (Peanut) Johnson, the only female pitcher in the history of the Negro Leagues, watches Mo’ne Davis hurl shutout in opener of Little League World Series
Johnson couldn't miss seeing the debut of a kid who is believed to be the first African-American girl to play in the 75 years of youth baseball’s most storied tournament.

My dad, bless his heart, thinks it is funny to say that to girls. Like when my little niece was throwing her softball. (Nothing is more hilarious, by the way, than contests of softball between 5 year olds).

That all this attention is encouraging her to continue playing a sport that she can get nowhere with. I was flummoxed, I must say and informed her that there have been women play college baseball and she informed me that a woman would never get a scholarship to play baseball in college. Basically, she was saying Mo'Ne needed to stop playing baseball and start playing softball.

I'm still kinda shocked over the statement.

And she too doesn't know shit about baseball. I have made my family insane for years by condemning the no women policy baseball, especially as it relates to the American League. A female pitcher would do well in the AL, given the same support the men get.

Average Pitching Speeds Of 10 Year Olds, 11 Year Olds, 12 Year Olds, 13 Year Olds, 14 Year Olds And 15 Year Olds

At 70mph, Mo'Ne's fastball would fall within the high range for 14 year olds. You can bet there are already colleges salivating over the prospect of recruiting her.

93ish is a more typical fastball from a good, strong starter.

And a lot of pitchers manage to survive on location without ever breaking 90 mph.

I would love to drive to Seattle to take in a King Felix plate appearance but I'm scared to: the last time I went to a Mariners game was the first game he lost this season. I don't know if I fucked up his season for him, but why risk it?
