(Calif.) Gov. Brown signs takedown on mugshot 'shakedowns'

A law banning the practice of charging people for the removal of their mugshots from the internet was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown Friday.
Senate Bill 1027, authored by Sen. Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, was approved by the legislature Aug. 4 and will take effect Jan. 1, 2015.
... We want to end the for-profit dissemination of mug shots, Hill said. We are all accountable for our own actions, but these businesses arent about accountability their practices amount to extortion.
... Websites found to be in violation of the new law will face a $1,000 fine per solicited payment and potential lawsuits.

(34,582 posts)I know, at least here in the DFW area, they went to a private company to handle the telephones. If you are arrested, and need to make your one phone call, it will be collect and if the person answering it accepts, it is a $10 charge. Yep, $10 for a phone call. Ain't privatization great?
