Arrests Made in Kidnapping of New York Amish Girls

Source: ABC NEWS

Police have arrested a man and woman in connection with the kidnapping of two Amish girls from their family's roadside vegetable stand.

Stephen Howells II, 39, and Nicole Vaisey, 25 both of Hermon, New York, were charged with two counts of first-degree kidnapping, District Attorney Mary Rain told ABC News tonight.

The girls showed up on the doorstep of Jeff and Pam Stinson barefoot, cold, wet and hungry Thursday night, the couple told ABC News earlier today.

The Stinsons opened their door to the two girls, Delila Miller, 6, and Fannie Miller, 12, who asked the couple to drive them back home. The Stinsons said they recognized the girls because they had bought produce from them before and were aware of news reports about their abduction.

They live in a rural area.

They have a family farm stand.

The girls went out to deal with a customer.

The customer turned out to be a criminal.

They live in a rural area? So what, does this make the parents less palbable? They have a family farm stand? Again, does the stand mean the parents provided them with a means of protection. The girls went out to deal with a customer? You mean a customer or a criminal, a child-molester, or killer? The customer turned out to be a criminal - YES, and there was NO ADULT around to warn, protect, or cause the "customer" to give pause as to what he was doing.

Again, arrest the parents - they are the assholes who put their daughters into this situation.

I would ask you - Would you allow your (if you had any) daughters to be in an unsupervised stand in a rural setting selling fruits or whatever to people driving by in a car? I sure as hell wouldn't.

I haven't heard any indication they have any interest in charging the parents with anything. Maybe that's because the parents did nothing wrong.

I also find it odd that you refer to the crime victims (the parents) as "assholes." We know who the assholes are. They're in jail now.

I have lived in rural areas. I let my kids roam around. I didn't supervise them every minute of the day.

I have also lived in urban areas. I let my kids walk to school. By themselves. I saw recently that some cop with an attitude like yours arrested a mother for doing the same thing I and countless other parents have done.

As for your question about allowing my daughters to be in an unsupervised stand in rural selling, let's take it a step further. Why allow anybody to be at an unsupervised stand in a rural setting? It's so scary!

My concern and anger is not your concern and anger - and it is scary, even more so for a young child being forced into a car. My reply:

Without supervision. Should my parents have been hauled away, too?
