Philly’s Mo’ne Davis Becomes 1st Little Leaguer On Cover Of Sports Illustrated
Source: CBS News-2 hours ago
Mone Davis, of Center City Philadelphias Taney Dragons, has become the first Little Leaguer to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Davis, 13, is the star female pitcher for the Taney Dragons, who became the first urban Philadelphia team to win the PA State Title and also reach the Little League World Series in Williamsport. Davis and the Dragons have won their first two games in the LLWS, and are now one playoff win away from the US Championship Game.
During their magical run, Davis has become a viral sensation receiving Tweets from numerous celebrities and a swarm of national media attention. On Friday, Davis became the first girl to throw a complete-game shutout in Little League World Series history, allowing only two hits and striking out eight hitters in a 4-0 Philly win.
Throughout the onslaught of media attention, Davis has shown amazing poise and calmness for anyone, let alone a 13-year-old. She says her dream is to be the point guard on the University of Connecticuts Womens basketball team. Philadelphias Taney Dragons (2-0) face Las Vegas, Nevada (2-0) on Wednesday at 7:30pm E.T. The winner advances to the U.S. Championship game on Saturday.

(11,816 posts)Mo'Ne is amazing, but kudos to all the Taney kids and their parents. Lots of hardworking coach dads and baseball moms (my friend's sister is one) Black and the white kids playing together and parents from a wide range of backgrounds (from well off to struggling). It's a story our country needs right now and Mo'Ne makes a great centerpiece for it.
I'm nervous about tomorrow's game against a tough team from Las Vegas, but I Believe in Dragons.

(11,833 posts)The coach, the other players, it's just natural. No big deal. I love that. I've only learned about the team this past week. But I saw in a press conference Mo'Ne saying 'Hey, don't just talk about me. Talk about all these other players. Like the guy who hit the three-run homer for our team.' Whoever is parenting / role-modeling / coaching these kids, kudos. We've come a long way. And it makes me so happy that it's just not a big deal for them.
