Missouri Lt. Gov.: We Need ‘Anglo-American’ Justice In Ferguson, Not Racial Protests

Source: MSNBC & The Raw Story

Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder (R) called for Gov. Jay Nixon to reinstate the curfew in Ferguson to allow the justice system — which he said was a product of “Anglo-American civilization” — to do its job. Following clashes with police in the wake of the death of slain teen Michael Brown, Kindler told MSNBC’s Ronan Farrow that Nixon had been wrong to end the curfew in Ferguson.

“I don’t understand an argument for not reinstating it,” he insisted. “I don’t understand that. I’m not trying to be overtly political. I am saying, the people of Ferguson, the people of the state of Missouri are crying out for leadership.”
Before Farrow ended the interview, he asked the lieutenant governor if he agreed with Ferguson Mayor James Knowles that “the perspective of all residents” was that there was no “racial divide” in the city.

Kinder said there was “no question” that race was playing a role in what was happening in Ferguson. “We do not do justice in America in the streets though,” he argued. “We have legal processes that are set in motion, that are designed after centuries of Anglo-American jurisprudence tradition, they’re designed to protect the rights and liberties of everyone involved.”

“That includes the Brown family, for justice for them and for the community. It also includes the officer who has not yet been charged,” he added. “Our constitutional and our Bill of Rights protections have to be followed here, and we do not do justice in the streets.” “That’s one of the great advances of Anglo-American civilization, is that that we do not have politicized trials. We let the justice system work it out.”

"‘Anglo-American’ Justice" makes it sound like he wants an all-white jury.

"centuries of Anglo-American jurisprudence tradition" refers to the fact that our law is partially based on British law.

Lt Gov's statement has all the proper code words.

Fits the playbook.

His message is clear.

What's the problem? Those uppity folks in Ferguson need a dose of good old fashioned Anglo American Justice.

It is often misinterpreted and when you read it very complex. At an African American studies class I took in the 1970's "Black Studies" in that day; Peter fell for the trap. He just smacked the tar baby.

That cop, on a Saturday afternoon surely did take it to be his call to be judge, jury and executioner of Mike Brown.

Even IF (and i doubt) Brown was "charging" the officer, shouldn't they be better equipped to deal with that than using their gun?

That people like him were paraded around the town square before being led to the guillotine. I'm not advocating violence but when the government of any town, county, city, state, or country commits violence against it's own people, do we not have the right and obligation to defend ourselves?

This nation was born through a violent bloody revolution. I would contend that the situation that confronts our nation is little different than the situation that confronted those who forged the American experiment.

The old aristocracy has been replaced by an aristocracy of the super wealthy oligarchs. All facets of power, politicians, military and police as little more than their henchmen. The Republican congressional leaders are little more than thugs, not unlike the vast majority police who have little more than contempt for the average citizen, especially minorities. The working class sits on their ass thinking they are exempt from being enslaved as they slide down the economic scale to poverty.

I was feeling sorry for the folks in Kansas and Oklahoma. How could they allow this shit?

Now, sorry to say, I live in the stupidest state in the union, maybe the world.

This is what happens when repubs take over. They lay waste to everything good about the nation.

He'll probably be the next governor. Idiots.

And I live in a very white county, with churches on every corner and I am sure a gun in every closet or pick up truck.

But then I realized things can only change for the better when we stay "in their faces" and show them that we can be good without religion, we can live a safe life without guns and I will roll my eyes and even argue if anyone speaks in a racist manner.

So hang in there. Maybe we can be the state that finally brought this to a head and got people to see what the police will do to American citizens and things will change!

(or maybe I am just being hopeful for my kids and grandkids who live here, too!)

MO Gov’s Race Gets Saucy — Republican Blames Incumbent Democrat for Exotic Dancer Story
Kevin Killeen
August 11, 2011 5:55 PM

Mo Lt. Governor Peter Kinder and Tammy Chapman

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) – Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder breaks his silence on the exotic dancer allegations, issuing a brief statement of denial and blaming the scandal on Governor Jay Nixon.

Former Penthouse Pet and exotic dancer Tammy Chapman told the Riverfront Times and KMOX that Kinder was a nuisance customer in the 1990s, when she allegedly performed dances for the then state senator at a metro-east strip club. She claims Kinder had to be asked not to return after he became “aggressive” during her dance routines. Chapman also claims that in recent months, she ran into Kinder at a south St. Louis bar known for its “pantsless” waitresses, and Kinder allegedly offered to let her stay in his Brentwood condominium, which is campaign-funded.

The Kinder statement does not address any specific allegations.

“Like most people I am not proud of every place I have been but this woman’s bizarre story is not true,” the statement says, “The Democrats have tried to use these tactics against me in the past and they have failed. Jay Nixon may want to make up false stories about the past, but I, like most Missourians, remain focused on the issues that are important to Missourians like jobs and education.”
