DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) An off-duty police officer shot and critically wounded a man accused of shooting a woman in the face near a Dallas school on Thursday evening. The incident happened just before 7:00 p.m. in the 2400 block of 52nd Street, outside of the Harry Stone Montessori Academy in east Oak Cliff.
According to police, the suspect drove up to a woman who was sitting in a car and opened fire. The off-duty police officer happened to be driving in his personal car with his family when he came upon the scene. The officer returned fire, striking the suspect.

The violence took place even as parents and educators were gathered for a meet-the-teacher night at the nearby school. The shooting had nothing to do with the school, its teachers, parents or staff, DISD spokesman Jon Dahlander said.

Why didn't the cop, who was OFF DUTY, just tail the suspect at a safe distance while calling for backup?
So now 2 people are shot instead of one.

(12,723 posts)does allow for the use of deadly force.
In other words, he knew this guy just shot someone and for all he knew could shoot someone else. it was his duty to do what he did and had to do.
No one should confuse an issue like this with the bullshit happening in New York, California and Missouri. This sounds like a legit use of deadly force.

I don't necessarily agree that shooting was the only or best option. I don't see anything inherent in the situation that suggests great danger in quiet, close pursuit, with intervention as a possibility, until a proper police unit could get there.

(23,288 posts)Let's be real. "tail him at a safe distance"? And then what? Three more units show up and fire 60 shots at the guy?

(63,199 posts)I simply don't understand the "no deadly force is acceptable" mindset.
This isn't an unarmed kid gunned down in the street; this was an armed assailant who had already shot someone. Deadly force was justified here IMO, because the threat was serious and ongoing.

(11,518 posts)Unfortunately we live in a far from perfect world. The suspect, for whatever reason, shot and attempted to kill the victim, and in this case the police officer more than likely prevented more innocent victims from being killed or injured and possibly saved the victims life.

(28,552 posts)... that the shooting in Ferguson was justifiable. Based on the story here, assuming it is substantially accurate, I have ZERO problem with this shooting.
Comparing or conflating the two is beyond ridiculous.
