Pentagon Cites 'Dangerous' And 'Unprofessional' Intercept Of US Plane By Chinese Fighter

Source: Associated Press

Associated Press Aug. 22, 2014 | 3:51 p.m. EDT

By ROBERT BURNS, AP National Security Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration on Friday accused a Chinese fighter jet of conducting a "dangerous intercept" of a U.S. Navy surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft off the coast of China in international airspace.

The Pentagon press secretary, Rear Adm. John Kirby, said Washington protested to the Chinese military through diplomatic channels, calling the fighter pilot's actions "unsafe and unprofessional."

At a news briefing at Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, where President Barack Obama is vacationing, Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, called the intercept "a deeply concerning provocation" and suggested it could set back efforts to improve relations.

"What we've encouraged is constructive military-to-military ties with China, and this kind of action clearly violates the spirit of that engagement," Rhodes told reporters.

harrassing the plane with crazy maneuvers or something. I've read that the US doesn't know if China encourages these actions by young officers, or just doesn't have enough control over them.

BEIJING/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – China sent several fighter jets and an early warning aircraft into its new air defence zone over the East China Sea, state news agency Xinhua said on Friday, raising the stakes in a standoff with the United States, Japan and South Korea

The Chinese patrol mission was “a defensive measure and in line with international common practices”, Xinhua cited air force spokesman Shen Jinke as saying.

The divisions between diplomacy and the old school "American exceptionlism" needs to be replaced with a diplomatic strategy for conflict resolution. I'm sure Prof. Bacevich could offer some guidance if asked.
