Chelsea Clinton quits as NBC News reporter
Source: AP
NEW YORK (AP) Chelsea Clinton said Friday she is quitting her job as a reporter at NBC News, citing increased work at the Clinton Foundation and imminent birth of her first child.
Bill and Hillary Clinton's daughter had been working at the network since 2011, sporadically doing feature stories on people or organizations doing public-spirited work. Politico magazine reported earlier this year that NBC was paying her $600,000 a year.
Her exit removes some potential awkwardness for the network if her mother runs for president in 2016. NBC made certain to keep Clinton off the air around the time her mother was making media appearances to promote a book, to avoid any appearance of conflict. NBC also received some criticism when stories about her salary appeared; the network didn't comment on the reports.

(135,425 posts)I think the answer here is the obvious one--she doesn't need the scratch, and there will be a conflict should her mother toss that hat in the ring.
Impending motherhood gave her an easy and understandable reason to head for the exit.
The networks do not hire the Jenna Bushes, Chelsea Clintons and Meghan McCains for their journalistic strengths--they hire them because they can't legally bribe politicians to appear on their shows, but when their KID asks a parent for some help on that score, well...who's gonna say no?
A politician's child is nothing more than an access card.
Thanks for letting me know I wasn't the only one thinking that.

(18,652 posts)If she's reporting on a pres. race that her mother is part of, that's a conflict. However, it's my understanding that unless the person is making monetary gain from a tit-for-tat transaction, there's no C o Interest. Legal beagles, correct me if I'm wrong.
She doesn't need to quit now due to a C o Interest unless she's promoting her mother's book.
MADem
(135,425 posts)She's not stupid--it's not about what's "legal"--it's about how the jackals on the right scrutinize her family excessively and try to find fault even if they're in bounds of the law.
If you think NBC wouldn't take heat for EVERY "Clinton story" they covered during the campaign season, with her on the payroll, I have a bridge for sale. The right would make it their job to whine like mucus-laden little children with stubbed toes on the playground each and every time NBC covered the race. It's only "OK" if you're a Republican--and everyone knows that.
I have not...

For someone with no experience and minimal audience? It screams of quid pro quo, and begs the question what was the return favor done for the company.

sorry, bad day for me. My spouse and I are having a rough week with his position and another person he reports that doesn't deserve the job they have and it's all about nepotism where he works. We're fed up and so thankful for a 3 day weekend that he desperately needs.

(1,986 posts)NBC already got the "pro quo," whatever it was, when Bill Clinton was President. That's what the enormous lecture fees from corporations are about, too. Retroactive payment for favors done. All famous public officials can cash in this way, and get their rewards.
Divernan
(15,480 posts)Which are in hope and anticipation of HRC in the Oval Office. Cheney only gets $50,000, and he did as much as Clinton for the MIC. And when you think about it, if you are right about these fees being payoffs for past favors, what does it say about whose interests Bill Clinton was promoting if he can collect up to $750, 000 for a single gig. Corporate giants don't squander 3/4 of a million dollars to reminisce about the good old days. At this point the Clintons are so bought and paid for by so many One Percent special interest groups and corporate sources of One Percenters' income, that her biggest problem as president would be in prioritizing which sponsor to reward first.
Re Bill Clinton's fees:
Prior to 2011, the most Clinton had earned from a single event was $525,000 for a 2008 speech in Edmonton, Alberta. Those astronomical speaking fees will be Gone With the Wind, should Hillary announce she's not running.
Here's one set of ranges, from 2012:
$5,000 $10,000. This would be the typical range for top keynote speakers people who have given numerous keynote speeches in the past and/or have serious career accomplishments.
$10,000 $20,000. Most of the major conferences pay their keynote speakers something within this range. Even for some of the more well-known keynote speakers, this is no fee to sneeze at; and if it is, keynoting the conference is probably an honor in itself as well.
$20,000 $50,000. This is the range for most celebrity speakers. When I say celebrity speakers, I mean actual celebrities that are household names or alternatively, category experts that are such big draws that it simply makes economic sense to pay this fee.
$50,000 $100,000. The top celebrity speakers fees are in this ballpark. There are only a few dozen folks that would be priced above this range. Typically, an organization paying a fee like this one can do so because the keynote speaker is such a big draw that ticket sales far exceed the amount of the speaker fee.
$100,000+. Interested in hiring Bill Clinton? Richard Branson? Donald Trump? Youve found your range.

The minute HRC announces she is NOT running - if that comes to pass, all the Clintons' fees will drop like stones and the phone will stop ringing in their agent's offices.

(15,480 posts)I tried googling for that info and found nothing. Anyone else know? Anyone? Buehler? We know the perks for this vanity, so called "charity" Foundation are lavish - 5 star hotels, private jets, 6 traveling assistants. I believe Bill is so frail, and Hillary (whose health records documenting the cause of her "fall" and subsequent diagnoses/treatment/prognosis are also in Deep Dark Secret Land) is so overweight and out-of-shape, that the only way they can travel as much as they do is to be virtually wrapped in a cocoon of pampering and luxury. Chauffered to the private jet terminal at the airport, no security waits or lines - same when they arrive at their destination. The most they have to do is climb the steps into the plane and walk from the luxury hotel's private entrance to the elevator. Oh, and stand propped up behind the podium and talk for 30 minutes.

Yes, her name opens doors, she has contacts, good for her. She wants to take some time off to be with her child and we raise hell about her making her choice. (2,157 posts)President Bill Clinton was a great President and a rock star for the Democratic Party and helps alot of Democrats get elected across the country...Wow this is not the DU I signed up on in 2004, at that time, as DEMOCRATS, we had more than our fair share of disagreements among each other and great debates were had. But rarely did we ever show so much disrespect to members of our own Party including and ecspecially the former leaders of our Party such as President Clinton or show the upmost disrespect of the current leader of the Democratic Party, the Commander In Chief of our armed forces, and oh yeah also the President of the United States, Barack Obama. Hell I don't think Powell or Rice were talked about as disrespectfully as the two Obama Administration's Secretary of States'.
If we lose everything in the 2014 election it will be a result of the infighting and disrespect between Democrats and the Democratic Party...
