Doctor admits he intentionally misdiagnosed cancer, ordered unneeded chemo

Source: Raw Story

Michigan doctor faces life in prison after he admitted to intentionally misdiagnosing patients with cancer and recommending unnecessary chemotherapy to dying patients.

Dr. Farid Fata pleaded guilty Tuesday to 13 counts of health care fraud, two counts of money laundering and one count of conspiracy to pay and receive kickbacks, reported the Detroit Free Press.

The crimes were part of a moneymaking scheme, he said.

“It is my choice,” Fata told the court. “I knew that it was medically unnecessary.”

NYTimes: V.A. Official Acknowledges Link Between Delays and Patient Deaths

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/18/us/va-officials-acknowledge-link-between-delays-and-patient-deaths.html?_r=0

Assistant Veterans Administration Inspector General Dr. John Daigh has acknowledged that patients were harmed by the long waits for treatment at this VA hospital. Top administrators created fake appointment lists to hide the delays and preserve their jobs.

I have advocated single-payer health care in the US for a long time, but this kind of stuff needs to be fixed and fixed hard before the general public will support it. It is *much* harder to weed out incompetent or criminal bureaucrats than it is to fire private providers. The system must be adjusted to that reality.

and is told they don't have evidence.

For chrissakes!

Mindless, careless, stupid greed. Why can't greedy people simply go into another line of work? Once they get greedy, their minds are no longer on the health of their patients.

Meanwhile, we make welfare recipients pee in a cup to start getting what amounts to a few hundred $ per month per family.

As a lawyer, I believe they shouldn't let any of us survivors on the jury. There's no way I could be fair on this case.

16. Experts: Two-thirds of hysterectomies unnecessary

Searing back pain. Endless periods with clots the size of plums. Bloating that turns even your "fat" pants into a tourniquet. Every year, symptoms like these drive thousands of women to consider getting a hysterectomy. The surgery is so popular, in fact, that one-third of all women will have a hysterectomy before they turn 60. For many, the procedure provides real relief.

But here's a shocker: More than two-thirds of the 600,000 hysterectomies performed every year may be unnecessary, experts say. The truth: Several other approaches are available that may have fewer complications and shorter recovery times. And some research suggests that hysterectomy may lead to sexual problems, incontinence, and a slight loss of physical strength. Other studies dispute those findings.

It was a woman doctor, too. She should absolutely have known better. I did not have one symptom. That was 30 years ago and I still do not have one symptom.
