Ukrainian government forces repelled a separatist assault on the Donetsk airport and shelling killed 10 civilians in the eastern city, fraying a cease-fire that had curtailed violence and casualties for most of last month.
Government forces still hold the airport of the biggest city in the combat zone after repelling a one-hour attack this morning, the army said on Facebook. The civilians were killed and at least nine more were wounded, including by a shell that exploded meters from a school where 70 children were in class, the Donetsk regional council said on its website.
The situation in the area remains difficult, Ukrainian military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said today. Rebels continue to violate the cease fire and shell Ukrainian positions.
With elections approaching on Oct. 26, an upsurge in violence since late last month contradicts comments by President Petro Poroshenko last week that the worst of the war is over. While U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt said on Twitter Russian forces and military equipment are still in the country and the border remains unsecured, Vladimir Putins government denies any involvement in the conflict.

(35,300 posts)They're the good guys. They can kill and steal with impunity and still be venerated because they're just good.
Awesome, even.
Ceasefires are made for the weak and puny.
Just another opinion from another rank-and-file liberal here on DU.
Of course, another snarky liberal that follows both the Russian and the Ukrainian press.. Lest there be confusion. Ili, kak govoriat po-russki, nedoumenie. Not that any other "nedoumeiut" or "don't really understand."

(55,445 posts)Since Moscow never formally agreed to it, because they said then (and even say now) that since they don't have any troops over the border in Ukraine, they weren't a party to any ceasefire agreement....
This was of course after weeks of Moscow screaming to the press that Kiev needed to agree to a ceasefire for the destruction to stop...
