Ebola outbreak is nearing possible end in Nigeria and Senegal
Strong emergency operations center, polio eradication experience keys to success
The Ebola outbreak in Nigeria appears to be nearing a possible end due to a rapid response coordinated by Nigerias Emergency Operations Center with assistance from international partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The official end to an Ebola outbreak comes when two of the 21-day incubation periods for Ebola virus have elapsed without any new cases.
During the outbreak, there were 19 laboratory-confirmed and one probable Ebola cases in two Nigerian states. Nearly 900 patient contacts were identified and followed; all but three have completed 21 days of follow-up period without Ebola symptoms. There have been no new cases since August 31 and the last three patient contacts will exit their 21-day follow-up on October 2 strongly suggesting the outbreak in Nigeria has been contained. A report on Nigerias response to the outbreak appears in a September 30 early release issue of CDCs Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).
"Although Nigeria isnt completely out of the woods, their extensive response to a single case of Ebola shows that control is possible with rapid, focused interventions, said CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D, M.P.H. Countries throughout the region as well as Nigeria need to take rapid steps to prepare for possible cases of Ebola in order to prevent outbreaks in their country.

Irrefutable proof that The Great American Ebola Panic is based on media confusion and ignorance and nothing else.

(2,983 posts)While I'm inclined to agree that the panic being spread is based more on confusion and ignorance than actual science... this, with respect, does not amount to irrefutable proof of anything. We're talking about a possible end - in a situation that was (seemingly) handled competently and well.
Our own (apparent) first case came to a Texas hospital - and was promptly released in spite of having all the symptoms. A few more screw ups like that in major US cities would be cause enough to panic. I think this can be contained, but I don't want to underestimate the situation, either.

(23,946 posts)Does anyone really think in the evident of a pandemic the uninsured will be tossed out into the street to spread the affliction?

(37,428 posts)A "system" that excludes by design so many thousands means that ebola may walk right into any ER without warning. A real system on which all citizens could rely would make tracking and prepping for an outbreak a lot more solid.

Even so, it definitely wouldn't hurt for the Feds to step in and start getting directly involved; better safe than sorry, IMO.
