MS-13 members charged in 3 killings, attempted murder in Northern Virginia

Armed with two machetes and a sawed-off shotgun, MS-13 gang members allegedly set off in a car last October to carry out an assassination at a location as brazen as it was chilling: a Prince William County school.
The plan was to shoot a wayward associate nicknamed Peligroso, or danger, as he left Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge after night classes wrapped up, according to a search warrant.
But the carload of armed gang members was stopped by authorities as they rolled into the schools parking lot, court records show. An informant had tipped off police just a day earlier.
The narrowly averted hit was part of a nine-count indictment against members of MS-13 unsealed Friday in federal court in Alexandria. Thirteen purported gang members have been charged in connection with the attempted murder and with three killings across Northern Virginia and are in custody. Eleven of the defendants could face the death penalty or life in prison if convicted.

(4,631 posts)Maybe life without parole in isolation instead of letting gangs run amok in prison?

(5,400 posts)IIRC, while that sounds humane, people go crazy, pretty quickly.
Being alone with ones thoughts can be beyond daunting for most inmates. Though perhaps I recall incorrectly.

(6,241 posts)White supremists shouldn't get to hang out together. MS-13 shouldn't get to hang out together.
Leaders get put in isolation, and are not allowed outside communication except for their legal reps. Foot soldiers are dispersed into the system.
If you are observed associating with a gang, pack your stuff.

(5,400 posts)I can't fault your logic but our prisons are messed up, looking to cut costs, and are already powder kegs.
Part of the reason for gangs is that the guards can not control the violence. The leaders have lawyers and IIRC the courts see isolation as being too harsh and requiring compelling documentation in order to be imposed.
But I too think we can do a much better job. I'd pay to see us try.
